Girls’ high school basketball rewind: No. 1 Cannon rolls past Raleigh’s Oak City Prep

Cannon School’s girls, No. 1 in The Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16, ran past Raleigh’s Oak City Prep 84-67 Friday.

Cannon (3-1) won its second straight game, getting balanced scoring. Five Cougars scored in double figures: Brooke Busby (16), Madison Drayton (16), Khloe Thompson (12), Maya McCorkle (12) and Jakaila Gaskin (11).

Cannon outscored Oak City 29-7 in a dominant first quarter.

Friday’s #BIG5 girls’ top performers

Justice Alexander, Concord Academy: Alexander had a game-high 22 points in a 71-39 win over Ambassador Christian.

Brooke Busby, Cannon School: Along with teammate Madison Drayton, Busby had a team-high 16 points in a 84-67 win over Oak City Prep.

Anna Haynes, Christ The King: Haynes had a game-high 24 points in a 71-65 win over Lake Norman Charter.

Amya Leathers, Hickory Ridge: In a 71-39 season-opening win at Chambers, Leathers had a game-high 21 points.

Giana Love, Ballantyne Ridge: Scored first basket in school history against West Stanly.
