Saturday’s high school basketball rewind: No. 1 Davidson Day runs past Millbrook at home
Davidson Day looked like the No. 1-ranked team in the Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16 boys’ basketball poll Saturday night at home, cruising to an 87-63 win over Raleigh’s Millbrook High School.
“I thought we came out with the right mindset,” Patriots head coach Ricky Hickman said after the game. “I thought we definitely started the game off well, shared the ball and everybody was involved, so overall I’m happy with how we competed.”
Davidson Day (4-1) jumped out to an early lead and quickly built a sizable cushion. Millbrook had no answer for the Patriots’ size, as senior forward LeVon Jacobs (21 points, nine rebounds) and junior center Will Stevens (12 points, eight rebounds) dominated inside.
“My guys just got me the ball in good spots,” Jacobs said. “We just did what we had to do. It was just really good play as a team.”
Led by its interior players, Davidson Day built up a 24-point lead at halftime and was up 30 to start the fourth quarter.
That was the end of the night for several Davidson Day regulars, including UNC signee Isaiah Denis (11 points, four rebounds, two assists, steal), as some of the younger Patriots got to play the final eight minutes.
But the night, Hickman said, belonged to the bigs — especially Jacobs.
“When LeVon is locked in he’s one of the best players in the state,” Hickman said. “What he did tonight was really no surprise. He’s got the ability to do a lot of great things for this team, and I look forward to seeing him continue do that.”
THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE
LeVon Jacobs, Davidson Day – The senior forward for the Patriots had an outstanding game, leading his team in scoring and rebounds.
Will Stevens, Davidson Day – The junior big man was dominant on the glass as well, blocking multiple shots and collecting eight rebounds.
Mac Habenicht, Davidson Day – The sophomore guard came in late and hit several huge threes to extend the Patriots’ lead down the stretch.
WHAT’S NEXT
Davidson Day will host Berean Baptist next Tuesday, while Millbrook hosts Hillside on Wednesday.
