Friday’s boys’ high school basketball rewind: No. 1 Davidson Day, No. 2 Providence Day fall
The top two teams in The Charlotte Observer’s Sweet 16 poll fell at the George Lynch Invitational at Myers Park High School on Friday.
Independent power Winston-Salem Christian beat No. 1 Davidson Day 76-68.
Davidson Day (5-2) got 22 points from UNC signee Isaiah Denis and 18 from sophomore Lincoln Vinson.
Winston-Salem Christian got big games from Tyson Thompson (15 points, seven rebounds), Adriel Nyorha (14 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals) and Alex Pissis (13 points, two assists).
▪ No. 2 Providence Day, a 4A private, was upset by 2A The Burlington School 58-54.
The Chargers, who had started the season on a four-game win streak, got 16 points from Jonah Lawrence.
The Burlington School’s Kaden Hammond had 16 points and 12 rebounds on a night when top-ranked sophomore King Gibson had nine points, nine rebounds,five assists, three blocks and two steals.
Friday’s boys’ #BIG5 top performers
Alex Dauska, Charlotte Latin: Dauska had a game-high 25 points in a 55-40 win over Rabun Gap (GA).
Brett Freeman, Ardrey Kell: A few nights after scoring a career-high 43 points against Charlotte Catholic, Freeman had 33 in a 72-50 win over Marvin Ridge on Friday.
Kaden Hammond, The Burlington School: Hammond had 16 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in a 58-54 win over Providence Day.
Dorian Reeves, Westminster Catawba: Reeves made the game-winning basket with 1.1 seconds left in a 54-52 win over Parris Prep.
LJ Rush, 1 of 1 PREP: Playing for LaMelo Ball’s high school team, Rush had 21 points, six steals, four rebounds and three assists in a 90-68 win over Gray Collegiate (SC) at the George Lynch Invitational at Marvin Ridge High School.
Saturday’s key games
No. 4 Chambers vs. The Burlington School, in George Lynch Classic at Myers Park, 4:30 p.m. — After one of the area’s top private schools (Providence Day) faced the Spartans on Friday night, one of the best public school teams gets a turn Saturday. Chambers downed No. 8 Hickory Ridge in its only game so far, with junior Markus Kerr scoring 22 points and grabbing seven rebounds. This contest will be in the main gym at Myers Park.
No. 8 Hickory Ridge vs. Central Cabarrus, in CabCo Classic at Cox Mill, 7:30 p.m. — The final game of the daylong Cabarrus County Classic pits the Ragin’ Bulls, with an excellent corps of guards, against a Central Cabarrus team that is rebuilding after the loss of all its starters and coach James Baker. Parker Watkins (11 ppg) and Travien Williams (10 ppg) lead Hickory Ridge. Central Cabarrus is still plans to play its frenetic style of basketball under new head coach Gerald Smith.
