Tuesday’s girls’ high school basketball rewind: No. 4 South Meck rolls; stars, boxscores

The South Mecklenburg High girls’ basketball team showed why it’s No. 4 in The Observer’s preseason Sweet 16 Tuesday night at home.

The Sabres (2-0) followed up Saturday’s impressive season-opening road win at Weddington with a comfortable home victory over Providence, 55-21.

Ashbrook transfer Nykira Arrington had a game-high 15 points, Kaitlyn Hensley added 10 and Skylar Young and Hope Kluttz scored eight apiece for South Mecklenburg.

Young left the game with a right knee injury just before halftime and did not return.

“I think starting the season with the win at Weddington gave us some momentum,” said Sabres head coach Justin Clarke, whose team plays again on Friday at West Cabarrus. “I’m really excited about what we’re doing right now.”

Avery Detenber had 11 points for Providence (0-2).

Tuesday’s #BIG5 girls’ top performers

Justice Alexander, Concord Academy: Alexander had a game-high 32 points in a 79-50 win over Lab U Prep.

NyKira Arrington, South Mecklenburg: In a 55-21 win over Providence, Arrington had a triple double (15 points, 15 rebounds, 11 steals)

Ma-Kaela Gidney, Hickory Ridge: In a 61-6 win over Independence, Gidney had 23 points, seven steals.

Maggie Kernodle, Charlotte Catholic: Kernodle had a game-high 21 points in a 54-51 win over Ardrey Kell. Rookie Cougars’ coach Kristal Mainsah picked up her first win.

Alexis Shehan, Lake Norman: In Tuesday’s season-opening 93-25 win over North Lincoln, Shehan scored her 1,000th career point. She also has 500 career rebounds.
