Tuesday’s girls’ basketball rewind: Bessemer City’s Tionna Pettus ties NC scoring mark
Bessemer City’s Tionna Pettus set a new N.C. public high school girls’ scoring record in Tuesday’s 77-53 win over North Gaston.
Pettus had 65 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks, breaking a seven-year-old scoring record of 63 set by Clinton’s Mikayla Boykin. Pettus’ points tied what’s believed to be the outright N.C. record of 65 points set by Providence Day’s Konecka Drakeford in 1991. Providence Day is an N.C. private school.
Pettus, a 5-foot-10 senior forward, is averaging 50.3 points, 15.3 rebounds, 11.7 steals and 3.3 blocks this season. She is shooting 72% from the field.
Three years ago, Pettus’ brother, Randall, set a Gaston County scoring record with 60 points in a boys’ game.
Tuesday’s girls’ #BIG5 top performers
Madison Drayton, Cannon School: Drayton led the Sweet 16 No. 1 Cougars to a 62-52 win over High Point’s Wesleyan Christian. She had a team-high 18 points.
