No. 1 Weddington has no problem with Northern Guilford in third round NCHSAA playoff game
Weddington has been dominant in the N.C. 4A playoffs so far, and that trend continued in Friday’s 55-0 third-round playoff win over Northern Guilford.
Weddington (12-0) defeated AL Brown by 47 and Sun Valley by 23 before the Warriors ran away and hid from Northern Guilford. The Warriors dominated in every phase from the start of the game.
On the first possession, Weddington quarterback Gregory Fee connected with running back Anthony Barrino on a 7-yard touchdown pass.
After a second straight Northern Guilford turnover on downs, Weddington running back Nick Diamond scored a 21-yard touchdown run for 14-0 lead.
After that, defensive lineman Aiden Harris — a finalist for the state’s biggest award, N.C. Mr. Football — added a 1-yard touchdown run, followed by another Barrion touchdown run for 30 yards to end the first quarter, 28-0.
In the second, Fee threw touchdown passes to Kelson Tate and Max Drakulic. Brody Anson had a touchdown run and tight end Matthew McCoy caught a shovel pass for another score.
Fee credited his team’s play Friday to its only focus throughout the week.
“The word of the week was ‘dominant,’” Fee said.
Added Weddington coach Andy Capone: “(We) came ready to go and focused all week. They did a great job of showing up and ready to work and it showed. We came out to a fast start and played really well and really clean.”
