Saturday’s rewind: Butler, Terrance Badio roll past West Charlotte at Hoops Challenge
Butler High’s Terrance Badio picked a good day to have a good day.
Playing in front of a good crowd in the finale of the Charlotte Hoops Challenge, Badio poured in 25 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 59-45 win over West Charlotte at Harding High School.
“They couldn’t stop me and I did what I do best: Get to the hole every time,” Badio said. “So I was just creating my own shots.”
Butler, off to a 3-0 start, trailed 28-26 at halftime but pulled away with a superb defensive effort in the second half. The Bulldogs limited West Charlotte to 7-for-28 shooting in the final two quarters and outscored the Lions 33-17.
Badio made 7 of 10 field goals and 10 of 12 free throws to get his 25 points. He added six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Teammates Isaiah White (13 points, seven rebounds, six steals) and Reece Starnes (11 points, seven rebounds) also had good games.
West Charlotte (2-1) got 17 points, six rebounds from Chase Bryson.
Stuart Hall wins Buckets Brand title at Charlotte Hoops Challenge
Former Davidson Day coach Jeff Lafave brought his Stuart Hall (VA) team to play in the Charlotte Hoops Challenge this weekend.
Stuart Hall beat Charlotte Country Day 65-58 in the championship game of the four-team “Buckets Brand” bracket. Inside the invitational tournament, organizers annually hold a four-team event with a champion crowned. The other games are one-off individual matchups.
In the final, Stuart Hall used a 16-8 second-quarter spurt to get some cushion and held off Country Day late. Stuart Hall got 22 points from Owen Laver and 14 from Wade Bland.
North Meck boys, girls win Holden Classic
North Mecklenburg’s boys’ and girls’ teams won the Leroy Holden Classic at North Meck on Saturday.
The tournament is named for the longtime Vikings boys basketball coach and athletic director.
In the girls final, tournament MVP Lenise Joseph of North Mecklenburg had 23 points in an 83-43 win over JM Robinson from Cabarrus County.
Joseph and the Vikings led 27-7 after the first quarter and 46-19 at halftime.
In the boys’ final, the Vikings, No. 3 in The Sweet 16, blew open a relatively close game in the second half to beat No. 9 Mooresville 81-57.
North Meck led 35-28 at halftime before winning easily behind 32 points from College of Charleston commit Chadlyn Traylor and 19 each from Ashton Pierce and Carson Evans.

Justice Alexander, Concord Academy girls: The 6-foot-1 freshman had 29 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists in a 60-48 win over Ardrey Kell at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge. She made 13 of 15 free-throw attempts.
Margaret Blythe, Sam Vanderhave, Olive Bigham, Charlotte Country Day: The three Bucs scored at least 20 points each in an 80-53 win over Myers Park at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge: Bigham (21 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals); Blythe (24 points, six rebounds, six assists, three steals) and Vanderhave (24 points, five assists, three steals, two rebounds). Country Day, No. 11 in The Sweet 16, improved to 6-1.
Kenan Dixon, Sean Nix, Evan Ingram, Cannon School: The three Cougars each had big games in an 89-66 win over Statesville at the Phenom Hoops’ Lakesgiving tournament at Lake Norman High. Dixon had 27 points, two steals; Nix had 26 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two assists; and Ingram had 16 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Cameron Newman, Gaston Christian: In a 62-36 win over Sweet 16 No. 15 South Mecklenburg at the Phenom Hoops Lakesgiving tournament, Newman led No. 12 Gaston Christian to a big win. He finished with 23 points, six steals, four rebounds and three assists.
Justin Whitfield, Victory Christian: In an 89-67 win over Westminster Catawba at the Charlotte Hoops Challenge, Whitfield made 10 of 16 field goals, including 5 of 7 3-point attempts and finished with 30 points, six assists, six steals and two rebounds.
