North Mecklenburg’s Ashton Pierce is The Observer’s high school athlete of the week
North Mecklenburg High basketball player Ashton Pierce is The Charlotte Observer’s high school athlete of the week.
Pierce won a weeklong vote from Observer’s readers to win the award. There were more than 15,000 votes cast.
A 6-foot-3 junior, Pierce scored 31 points and had six rebounds to lead North Mecklenburg to a 101-50 win over Porter Ridge in the semifinals of the Leroy Holden Classic on Nov. 29.
The next night, Pierce had 19 points and three rebounds to lead the Vikings to an 81-57 win over Mooresville in the Leroy Holden Classic championship game.
Pierce was the co-most valuable player of the tournament, along with teammate Chadlyn Traylor.
North Mecklenburg (3-0) beat Berry. 74-29, on Thursday and plays Our Lady of Mount Carmel, from Baltimore, Maryland, at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the Washington (D.C.) Showcase.
Mount Carmel (5-1) is the fourth-ranked boys’ prep basketball team in Maryland, according to MaxPreps.
