Tuesday’s girls’ rewind: Down 2 starters, South Meck tops Charlotte Catholic on the road

South Mecklenburg High’s girls’ basketball team, No. 4 in The Observer’s Sweet 16, played Charlotte Catholic without two of its best players, but the unbeaten Sabres just kept moving on.

With Skylar Young (knee) and Nykira Arrington (hand) both out, South Meck beat Catholic 51-40 on the road Tuesday to improve to 6-0.

It was South’s sixth straight win against its neighboring rival.

“Strength in numbers,” South Mecklenburg coach Justin Clarke said. “That’s been the motto all season and our kids have really bought in to it. We’re not letting adversity keep us down.”

Kaitlyn Hensley had 12 points, K.B. Brown 10 and Chloe Grant 10 to lead a balanced attack in Tuesday’s victory.

Catholic (1-4) got nine points each from Megan Shea and Caroline Fey.

Justice Alexander, Concord Academy: A freshman guard, Alexander had a game-high 27 points in a 66-18 win over Westminster Catawba. Alexander is averaging 21.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Olive Bingham, Charlotte Country Day: Game-high 20 points in a 60-10 win over Pine Lake Prep.

Ma-Kaela Gidney, Hickory Ridge: Gidney had a game-high 25 points in a 68-20 win over Sweet 16 No. 12 J.M. Robinson. No. 13 Hickory Ridge improved to 5-1.

Mackenzie Ortscheid, Northwest Cabarrus: A 5-foot-11 junior wing, Ortscheid had a game-high 23 points in a 61-44 win over county rival Central Cabarrus.

Sophia Zoerb, Hough: Zoerb had a game-high 23 points in a 75-58 win over Mooresville.
