Charlotte-area previews

SATURDAY

(girls) A.C. Reynolds (1-0) at No. 3 Mallard Creek (4-1), 2 p.m. — Asheville’s Reynolds, a perennial basketball power, visits state title hopeful Mallard Creek for a matinee contest. The Rockets have several starters back from last season’s 27-2 team. Elle Stone (16 ppg) leads an equally experienced Mallard Creek team, in what should be an outstanding matchup.

(boys) A.C. Reynolds (1-0) at No. 11 Independence (4-0), 4 p.m. — The Reynolds boys’ team also is visiting Charlotte this weekend, and the Rockets will take on the Patriots later Saturday afternoon. Grant Clayton had 25 points and 10 rebounds in Reynolds’ only game prior to this weekend. Reynolds tends to have a high-powered offense, while Independence plays solid defense.

(girls) No. 1 Cannon School (9-1) at Rolesville (3-0), 2:30 p.m. — How about the defending 4A private school champion facing the defending 4A public school champ? That’s the story behind this game. Caitlyn Jones, a standout on Rolesville’s title team last season, is averaging 20.5 points a game. Madison Drayton is averaging 18.0 points and shooting 63 percent from the floor for Cannon School.

(boys) No. 1 Lake Norman (5-0) vs. New Hanover (1-0), in Good Guys vs. Cancer Classic at First Flight High, 5 p.m. — It’s the final day of this showcase event, with 10 games on the schedule. The Lake Norman-New Hanover contest might be the feature event. New Hanover was 32-1 last season, losing to North Mecklenburg in the 4A state title game. Lake Norman has title hopes this season with an experienced lineup led by 6-10 C Trent Steinour, a Clemson commit. Lake Norman’s Tre McKinnon became the school’s all-time leading scorer with his 23-point performance Tuesday. Another feature game in this Outer Banks showcase event is at 8 p.m., with Davidson Day facing perennial Virginia power St. Anne’s Belfield.

(girls) Ravenscroft (4-3) at Charlotte Latin (3-1), noon — A couple of teams that could be big factors in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s 4A playoffs meet for a midday matinee. Junior G Lanie Edwards is averaging nearly 15 points a game and shooting 48 percent from the floor for Charlotte Latin.

Showdown at the Border, at Clover High, 11 a.m. — Seven games are on the schedule at Clover, highlighted by the Gaston Day-Andrew Jackson boys’ contest at 2 p.m. and the Queens Grant Charter-Clover girls’ game at 6:30. Gaston Day (6-2) is led by 6-5 sophomore F Dylan Bradley, averaging 16.3 points a contest. Andrew Jackson (1-1) counters with a team featuring four returning starters, including senior PG Bryce Peterson, who was fourth in South Carolina in assists last season.

Queens Grant Charter (6-1), has two outstanding scorers in freshman Za-Miya Bynum (29.9 ppg) and junior Misa Garris (22.4 ppg). Clover counters with a team featuring sisters Jada and Julie Chambliss, who were standouts last season at Fort Mill.
