Observer readers pick Hough’s Cameron Cyr as high school football player of the year
After his junior season, Hough High School’s Cameron Cyr made a decision to really change his body in order to have a big senior year.
“The main thing was me to get my weight up,” Cyr said. “I wasn’t much more than 190 pounds last year playing defensive end and defensive tackle and I figured gaining weight and getting in the weight room and gaining strength would be a big factor in my success this year.”
Cyr put on 25 pounds and had the season he was looking for: 50 tackles, with 20 tackles for a loss. He led the Huskies with 15.5 sacks.
He’ll end his year as the Charlotte-area high school football player of the year, as selected by Observer readers.
Each week this fall, the media company has held a contest to determine the player of the week. Last week, all of the previous winners were pooled together to allow readers to vote on a player of the year.
Cyr, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior defensive end, won by more than 3,000 reader votes.
The Observer will name its own choice for coach and players of the year when its annual All-Observer regional football team debuts on Christmas Day.
“Man, Cam is such a hard worker,” Hough coach Shawn Baker said, “and some people think he’s a little undersized, because he’s 6-2, 220, but his get off is crazy. I mean, the kid has a 4.5 GPA and he does everything the right way and does everything you ask him to. Everybody at school likes him. On the field, he’s able to drop in coverage, rush the passer, blitz in a couple different ways. So we were just happy to see him get that player of the (year).”
