Friday’s girls’ rewind: Country Day beats Charlotte Catholic for first time in 14 years
Charlotte Country Day beat Charlotte Catholic 60-57 Friday, its first win over the Cougars in 14 years.
Sam Vanderhave had 22 points and Olive Bigham had 21 for the Bucs (8-2).
Country Day, which has won four of its past five games, is No. 15 in The Observer’s Sweet 16.
Catholic got 18 points from Maggie Kernodle, but lost its fifth straight game. The Cougars are 1-5.
Friday’s girls #BIG5 top performers
Ava Beals, Cuthbertson: Beals had a game-high 21 points in a narrow 39-38 win over Parkwood.
Lenise Joseph, North Mecklenburg: Joseph had a game-high 28 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and three blocks in a 58-24 win over Hickory Ridge. North Meck is No. 5 in The Sweet 16. Hickory Ridge is No. 11.
Hannah Moss, Butler: In a 74-39 win over Chambers, Moss had 25 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Teammate Brooklyn Saunders had 16 points, eight assists and six steals.
Tionna Pettus, Bessemer City: In a 68-5 win over Chase, Pettus had 42 points, 16 steals, 14 rebounds and six blocks.
Curmiya Tillman, Nyla Johnson, Lincolnton: The pair combined for 52 points in Friday’s 71-56 win over Bunker Hill.

Dynamic Prep, based in Irving, Texas, has four players averaging in double figures, led by Jermaine O’Neal Jr. (15.5), son of six-time NBA all-star Jermaine O’Neal. This game is part of the three-day showcase event at Ridge View.
(boys) Concord Academy (13-0) vs. Providence Day (8-3), in Barefoot Classic at Providence Day, 5:30 p.m. — This is the finale of the four-game event at Providence Day. Coaches and their staffs go barefoot as part of a charity effort for Samaritan’s Feet. Concord Academy looks like a genuine NCISAA 3A state title contender, with James Minlend (14.2 ppg) leading the way. Providence Day, the NCISAA 4A runner-up last season, has won five in a row.
(boys and girls) Wendell Moore Invitational: Moore, a former N.C. Mr. Basketball and current NBA player, is sponsoring two tournaments in one. The first is at Harding High School, where the feature game is at 7:30, when Harding plays unbeaten Olympic. That game will feature two of the state’s best freshmen point guards: Harding’s Kaharri Coleman and Olympic’s Eddie Cota, son of former UNC star Ed Cota.
There are also four games at Moore’s alma mater, Cox Mill High in Concord, where Cox Mill will play Palisades in the feature game at 7:30.
