Tuesday’s girls’ basketball rewind: No. 3 Mallard Creek rolls past West Charlotte
Mallard Creek’s girls’ basketball team, No. 3 in The Observer’s Sweet 16, brought its defense to West Charlotte High School on Tuesday.
The Mavericks, who held West Charlotte scoreless for nearly the entire first quarter, left with a comfortable 49-24 win over their Queen City 3A/4A conference opener.
For the game, Mallard Creek forced 41 turnovers while limiting the Lions to 23.2 percent shooting.
“I thought our defense was great,” said Mallard Creek coach Karlyn Dixon, whose team improved to 7-1 overall and won its fifth straight game. “But it seemed like the basket was really small for us. But that’s going on the road in a conference game. We’ll just have to keep working and keep improving.”
Kiara Anderson had 15 points and Elle Stone 10 for Mallard Creek. Jonnae Bennett had seven points for West Charlotte (5-2).
Tuesday’s girls’ top performers
Amani Barner, Myers Park: Barner had 20 points, a game-high, in a 55-15 win over Ballantyne Ridge. Myers Park snapped a six-game losing streak.
