Meet the 2024 All-Observer tennis team, the best players in the Charlotte region
Myers Park junior Teagan Reilly is the Charlotte Observer girls’ tennis player of the year for the second straight year.
Reilly finished 25-1 in singles play this season, winning the SoMeck 4A conference singles title and player of the year honors as well as the 4A West Regional singles championship for the third consecutive season.
Reilly was also the 4A state singles runner-up with her only loss coming in the state finals.
Reilly, who is 84-4 in her Myers Park’s singles career, also led the Myers Park girls’ tennis team to a 21-1 record, with their lone loss coming to Providence in the 4A dual team state semifinals.
▪ Charlotte Country Day’s Calvin Davis and Providence’s Josh Oxendine share The Observer coach of the year award. Both men led their teams to state championships.
Davis led the Buccaneers to their third straight NCISAA 4A state title. Country Day finished 20-0.
Davis, who has guided the Charlotte Country Day boys’ and girls’ tennis teams to 36 state championships, was inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Association Hall of Fame last year.
Oxendine guided Providence to the first 4A state title in school history, clinching the championship with 5-3 win over Cardinal Gibbons.
Providence (20-1) won 20 straight matches after losing their season opener to Cuthbertson.
First team
Singles
Mallory Aull, Pine Lake Prep: The Pride freshman went 16-0 in singles play this season, sweeping the Catawba Shores’ 1A/2A conference, 2A West Regional and the 2A state singles titles.
Madison Darnell, Highland Tech: The three-time all-state junior was a 1A state singles semifinalist after winning the 1A state title as a sophomore.
Ella Davis, Charlotte Catholic: The Cougars’ star went 25-8 this season, winning the Southwestern 4A conference singles title while also earning 4A West runner-up.
Sophia Harris, Charlotte Christian: The Knights’ senior, a Fairfield University commit, is a four-time all-state performer. Harris, who is 50-1 in singles play in her high school career at Charlotte Christian, was CISAA player of the year.
Teagan Reilly, Myers Park: The Mustangs’ senior was SoMeck 4A conference singles champion, 4A West Regional singles champion and 4A state runner-up.
Anna Torstrick, Charlotte Country Day: The Buccaneers’ all-state senior went 17-1 as Country Day’s No. 1 singles player on the way to a state title three-peat.
Vivian Wu, Providence: The Panthers’ freshman went 23-4 in singles play this season. She finished third at the 4A Western Regionals.
Doubles
Sidney Dann, Fr./Molly McGuirk, Sr., East Lincoln: The Mustangs’ duo went 19-1 in doubles play, winning the Western Foothills’ 3A conference and 3A West Regional titles. They also were 3A state doubles runner-up.
Anslee Falls, So./Luci Falls, Sr., Lake Norman Charter: The Knights’ sisters were South Piedmont 3A conference doubles champions, won the 3A West Regional title, and suffered their only loss in the 3A state semifinals.
Kayla Nofziger, So./Agnes Shinn, Sr., Myers Park: The Mustangs’ duo was the SoMeck 4A conference and 4A West Regional champions, also finished as 4A state doubles runner-up.
Natasha Wallace, Fr./Sasha Wallace, Providence, Sr.: The Panthers’ sister went 26-2 in doubles play together, winning the Southwestern 4A doubles title. They were also 4A West Regional runner-up and 4A state quarterfinalists.
Emilee Ibsen/Avery Shaffer, Gaston Day, Jr.: The Spartans’ all-state juniors went 11-1 this season and led Gaston Day to its third state title in the last four years. Ibsen is 65-7 in singles play and 65-5 in doubles in her high school career, while Shaffer is 71-2 in singles and 63-5 in doubles.
