Meet the 2024 All-Observer field hockey team, the best players in the Charlotte region
Charlotte Catholic’s Meg Tebben and Myers Park’s Lucy Curtis are the 2024 Charlotte Observer high school field hockey players of the year.
Tebben, a junior forward, is the offensive player of the year. Curtis a senior all-state goalkeeper, is the defensive player of the year.
The All-Observer team represents the best players in the media company’s coverage area, which includes athletes from the following counties: Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Union along with York and Lancaster counties in South Carolina.
Tebben, the offensive player of the year, is a three-time all-state performer. This season, she had 40 goals and had 15 assists for a state finalist.
Tebben was also the Carolinas Conference player of the year and an All Mid-Atlantic region pick. With one season to play, she has 84 career goals and 42 career assists.
Curtis, the defensive player of the year committed to Ohio State, was Charlotte Metro’s conference player of the year. She had nine shutouts, while allowing 14 goals in 17 games this season.
Curtis has 35 shutouts with 38 goals allowed for Myers Park in the past three seasons.
This season, Curtis recorded 149 saves for a Myers Park team that advanced to the NCFHA state semifinals for the 10th straight season.
The Observer field hockey coach of the year is Charlotte Catholic’s Sheila Baker. Baker led the Cougars to an 18-4 record and state championship appearance against Raleigh’s Cardinal Gibbons.
Gibbons beat Catholic 18-4 in the finals.
Before the state final, however, Catholic shut out all three playoff opponents, winning by a combined score of 16-0, and the Cougars tied for their conference title, going 7-1 in league play.

FORWARDS
Morgan Bleakney, Myers Park, Sr.: The Mustangs’ all-state pick scored 10 goals and dished out eight assists this season.
Marion DuBose, Charlotte Latin, Jr.: The Hawks’ all-state pick scored 12 goals to go with 15 assists.
Tina Garofoli, Providence Day, Jr.: The Chargers’ all-state pick, a University of Miami (Ohio) commit, led Providence Day with 17 goals, four assists.
Grayson Anne McCurdy, Charlotte Country Day, Sr.: The Buccaneers’ all-state pick, a James Madison lacrosse commit, scored 11 goals and had seven assists.
Meg Tebben, Charlotte Catholic, Jr.: The Cougars’ all-state selection, an Iowa commit, scored 40 goals to go with 15 assists.
Kemp Walters, Myers Park, Sr.: The Mustangs’ all-state star had 10 goals and 10 assists.
MIDFIELDERS
Cate Brinley, Providence Day, Jr.: The Chargers’ all-state junior had three assists, defensive saves.
Stella Burke, Charlotte Latin, Sr.: The Hawks’ all-state pick scored 14 goals and had five assists.
Libby Castle, Marvin Ridge, Jr.: The Mavericks’ all-state star led Marvin Ridge with 16 goals and 14 assists.
Olivia Crowe, Myers Park, Sr.: The Mustangs’ all-state star scored a team-best 11 goals to go with eight assists this season.
Margaret Piasecki, Charlotte Latin, So.: The Hawks’ all-state selection scored 12 goals and had a team-best 19 assists.
Melanie Watson, Ardrey Kell, Sr.: The Knights’ all-state pick, a Bowdoin College (Maine) commit, scored five goals and had five assists.
Holland Wilkins, Charlotte Country Day, So.: The Buccaneers’ all-state performer, the CISAA conference player of the year. had eight goals and 13 assists for the NCISAA state runner-up.
DEFENDERS
Taylor Barto, Covenant Day, 8th-grader: The Lions’ star was an all-state pick with four goals and two assists this season, despite being in middle school.
Molly Brown, Charlotte Country Day, Jr.: The Buccaneers’ all-state junior defender also chipped in two goals and an assist.
Avery Painter, Charlotte Catholic, Jr.: The Cougars’ all-state star was the Carolinas Conference defensive player of the year. She also had five goals and seven assists.
Caroline Winters, Charlotte Catholic, Jr.: The Cougars’ star, who also played midfield, scored eight goals, including two-game winners, the last of which came in the state semifinals.
GOALKEEPERS
Lucy Curtis, Myers Park, Sr.: The Mustangs’ all-state selection is an Ohio State commit who had 149 saves and recorded nine shutouts.
Lucy Pigg, Providence (Goalkeeper), Jr.: The Panthers’ all-state pick had 268 saves this season.
Madison Schwartz, Charlotte Catholic, So.: The Cougars’ all-state pick recorded 14 shutouts, allowing just 18 goals in 22 games this season.
