Saturday’s rewind: Ambassador Christian rolls past Bull City Prep at Phenom Hoops’ event

After coaching at Providence High and winning a state title at Myers Park, Ambassador Christian boys’ basketball coach Scott Taylor has always kind of had a routine.

It was always something like this: Come out of Christmas break, lock in for conference play and try to get his team ready to make a state championship run.

But Ambassador Christian, which beat Durham’s Bull City Prep 71-49 Saturday night at home, doesn’t have a conference or a state association to play in, so Taylor’s team is — for now — focused on other things.

“We often get questions of ‘What’s been the most difficult thing,’” Taylor said, “and I don’t think there’s some great answer. It’s just different. Normally, we’d be trying to get the team prepared to play their best ball, to make that playoff run, but that’s not really where we are with this program right now, not being in an association.”

Saturday, Ambassador Christian (9-4) played for the first time since Dec. 23, when it beat NCISAA power Greenfield School 60-51 at the Spectrum Center in uptown Charlotte.

Playing in the Phenom Hoops’ Ambassador Classic on Saturday, the Lions didn’t have much trouble with a Bull City Prep team (5-10) that lost, 87-67, at Forsyth Country Day on Friday night.

Ambassador was scheduled to play South Carolina’s Cardinal Newman School, but Taylor said the school has at least temporarily suspended its season following an incident with team players during a holiday tournament.

“So we were scrambling looking for an opponent,” Taylor said, “and we got Bull City to play. I appreciate them being willing to shift things around and come down.”

Ambassador controlled the game Saturday, getting its third straight victory, courtesy of 20 points from JD Bowden, 15 from Judah King and a combined 15 points and 12 rebounds from Tyler Brown and Jeremiah Franklin.

Taylor said the time off really helped.

“We were able to reset,” he said, “and redirect conversations of what we wanted to be about, about consistent development, because we’re not tied down to that playoff push where you have to win games.”

Ambassador started the season with four straight wins and then went 2-4, before bouncing back with its now current three-game win streak.

Taylor said some of that is playing a tough schedule, and some of it is having a first-year team with two seniors and six freshmen.

“What we hope,” he said, “is for our team to show growth.”

In the off-season, Taylor said Ambassador plans to apply to join the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association, which would allow the Lions to eventually join a conference and play for a state championship.

But in the meantime, he just wants his team to keep growing — and keep developing.

“There’s some benefit to (being in the NCISAA),” he said. “There’s the credibility that being in association brings, and it helps with some of the national events we want to be in. And everybody wants to win, and being in an association, there are trophies attached to it. So I’m not shy saying we want to be in, but ultimately I’m about what’s best for our school and our other athletic programs. But we do have big goals here, and I want to help this thing grow.”

Burlington Christian 62, Queens Grant 57: Burlington Christian (9-8) was down seven points heading into the fourth quarter but rallied to win in the final eight minutes led by Karon Watlington (17 points, four rebounds), Charles Chienggen Pur (16 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks, two steals) and Larry Blount (11 points, two rebounds, two assists).

Queens Grant (12-6) got 16 points, four rebounds from Ian Howard and 12 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and two steals from Chase Smith.

Friday’s girls’ rewind: Mallard Creek rallies past North Meck on the road

Mallard Creek head coach Karlyn Dixon knew Friday’s girls high school basketball matchup at nearby rival North Mecklenburg would be challenging. After all, both teams were ranked among the state’s top five in the most recent N.C. state rankings.

But Dixon’s Mavericks, No. 3 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll, had to rally from as much as a 14-point first-half deficit and survived a late scare in taking a 54-52 victory at the packed North Mecklenburg gymnasium. North Meck is No. 4 in The Sweet 16.

“I think that’s a testament to our growth and maturity,” said Dixon, whose team trailed by a game-high 29-15 with 2 minutes, 14 seconds left in the opening half and 33-20 at the break. “In the past, if we had been down that many points, we may have folded. But we came back with energy and defense.”

Mallard Creek opened the third quarter on a 23-4 surge to take its largest lead (43-37) with 1:20 to play in the third quarter. But North Mecklenburg coach Jennifer Baker’s team regained its footing and the Vikings even took a 51-48 lead with 3:43 to play and had a chance to force overtime when senior Kameron Smith was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 0.3 seconds left.

Smith hit 1 of 3 free throws and Mallard Creek (11-2, 3-0) left with the Queen City 3A/4A Conference victory. North Mecklenburg fell to 8-2, 1-1.

“Playing at North Meck is always tough,” Dixon said. “The gym was crowded and hot and they played a great game.”

Kiara Anderson had 16 points (10 in the third quarter), Elle Stone 14 (nine in the third quarter) and My’Asia Young 10 (six in the fourth quarter) to lead Mallard Creek. Sophomore Lenise Joseph had a game-high 23 points (14 in the first half) to pace the Vikings.

SATURDAY

(boys) Corvian Community (3-5) vs. Reidsville (8-0), in Ed Price Classic at High Point Andrews High, 8 p.m. — This could be a stellar matchup. Ignore Corvian’s record, as several of the Cardinals’ basketball regulars were on the football team that played until just before Christmas. The Cardinals have won three in a row, with sophomore R.J. Moore Jr. (28.1 points per game) and Malachi McCutcheon (7.9 rebounds per game) leading the way. Corvian, the 1A state runner-up last season, looks like a state title contender again. Reidsville, meanwhile, is arguably the best team in the state so far, regardless of size classification. The Rams are led by junior Dionte Neal (24.6 ppg) and senior Johnnyius Sharpe (21.6 ppg).

(boys) Gaston Day (12-5) vs. Carolina International School (9-3), in Ambassador Christian New Year’s Showcase, 4:30 p.m. — This is one of the top contests in the six-game showcase at Ambassador Christian. Gaston Day’s DeShawn Coulter (13.6 ppg) and Dyland Bradley (13.5 ppg) face a Comet club that looks to challenge Queen’s Grant Charter and Corvian Community for the area’s 1A supremacy. K.J. Shouse Jr., a 6-4 junior, leads the Comets with 18.6 points a game. He is shooting 60 percent from the floor.

Another feature game in this showcase has Queen’s Grant Charter (12-5) facing Burlington Christian (8-8) at 6 p.m.

(girls) Providence Day (12-5) at Sanford Grace Christian (8-4), 2:30 p.m. — Providence Day is red-hot, having won 10 in a row before Friday’s play. Ginny Anne Dumont (15.6 ppg, 6.1 rpg) has been leading the Chargers. Sophomores Jordan Speller (13.8 ppg) and Kyndoll English (10.8 ppg, 11.2 rpg) lead Grace Christian, filling in for the departure of last season’s N.C. Player of the Year, Sarah Strong, now playing at UConn.
