Girls’ basketball rewind: No. 2 Lake Norman looks much improved in rout of West Cabarrus

This season’s Lake Norman High School’s girls basketball team, No. 2 in The Observer’s Sweet 16, looks a little different than some of its past iterations.

Yes, the Wildcats still press you all over the court. Yes, they still make every pass tough.

And yes, junior Kelsey Rhyne and senior Samantha Shehan, who combined for 165 made 3-pointers before Tuesday’s game, are still among the best shooters in North Carolina.

But unlike any of the past three teams — Wildcats’ squads that went 81-8 and made a state championship appearance in 2023 — this version of Lake Norman (10-0, 1-0 Greater Metro 4A) is much more athletic and has the type of depth the previous teams didn’t.

This new-look Lake Norman team steamrolled rival West Cabarrus 74-24 in its Greater Metro conference opener Tuesday at home.

Former West Cabarrus stars Kaiya Bond and Rayana Minard transferred to Lake Norman before the season. Those two combined to average 27 points per game last season. Now, they have helped transform how Lake Norman is able to play.

Minard, a promising 5-10 junior, was averaging 11.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 steals before Tuesday’s game. Bond, a 5-11 junior, was averaging 7.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.5 assists.

Their athleticism adds a new element to Lake Norman, which already had four college recruits in Rhyne, Samantha and Alexis Shehan (Kentucky Wesleyan) and Addison Sirianni (Chaminade).

It was simply too much for West Cabarrus (9-5, 2-1) Tuesday.

Lake Norman (10-1) looked like the No. 1 ranked 4A public school team in North Carolina. The Wildcats made the outside shots, forced steals and ran effectively.

Playing at home, the Wildcats jumped out to 24-6 lead in the first quarter. By the middle of the second, Lake Norman was up by 30 against what is almost certainly a 4A playoff team.
