Providence Day’s girls join The Observer’s Sweet 16 high school basketball poll

Just one new team, the Providence Day girls, joins The Observer’s Sweet 16 high school basketball polls this week.

Providence Day, which beat rival Charlotte Country Day on Saturday, won its fifth straight game to improve to 16-4. The Chargers began the season 2-5 but have gotten hot since then.

The Chargers have won 17 state championships, 21 conference championships and produced seven N.C. Gatorade players of the year and two McDonald’s All-Americans.

The Sweet 16, which began in the 1984-85 school year, ranks the teams in the media company’s coverage zone, which now includes schools in the following counties: Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union. Schools must play in a recognized state association to be considered.

The polls are compiled by longtime N.C. basketball experts Rick Lewis and Alex Bass, who are co-hosts of The Observer’s “Talking Preps” streaming show.

In the boys’ poll, Lake Norman remained at the top spot and Providence Day moved up a spot to No. 2. No new teams joined this week, although Charlotte Catholic moved into the top 10. The Cougars (13-3) have won three straight games and jumped two spots to No. 10.
