Olympic High’s Trojans capture inaugural CMS girls’ wrestling city championship
Olympic High made history, winning the team title in the inaugural CMS girls’ city wrestling tournament on Thursday at Ballantyne Ridge High School.
Olympic won over a field that included 15 teams and 116 wrestlers competing in 12 weight classes.
“Since this is a first-year event, it’s a pretty big deal for us,” Olympic coach Ryan Beam said. “It’s history and I’m thankful to my veteran wrestlers for making it happen.”
Olympic led throughout the event and finished with 101 points to outdistance second-place East Mecklenburg by 10 points.
The Trojans were led by first-place finishers Charity Thornton (100-pound weight class) and Jayden Holmes (185); second-place finishers Ana Sanchez (120) and Adalai Eagle (132); third-place finisher Emily Nylekoyah (126); and fourth-place finishers Aya Gross (114) and Brianna Hernandez (152).
Ballantyne Ridge freshman 114-pounder Sofia Salas, who went unbeaten in her weight class and improved to 26-0 on the season against female competition, was voted by coaches as the event’s most outstanding wrestler.
