Concord Academy, Providence Day boys among winners as snow changes basketball schedules

An expected winter storm is affecting the Charlotte-area high school basketball schedule
An expected winter storm is affecting the Charlotte-area high school basketball schedule

At least three school systems in the area canceled athletic activities due as snow spread across the Charlotte region Tuesday afternoon and evening.

Cabarrus, Union and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools didn’t have games or practices Tuesday. In addition, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Union County school systems will be closed Wednesday, and the Cabarrus County Schools will have an online education day.

That means no games or practices will be held Wednesday in those counties, including the big Ardrey Kell at South Mecklenburg doubleheader that was scheduled.

The Iredell-Statesville Schools have not announced any change in plans for Wednesday, which means the big Mooresville-Lake Norman boys’ game is still scheduled.

Some teams were able to play Tuesday night, and we’ve got full coverage below, plus the latest on schedules, reschedules and more.

Tuesday’s summaries

GIRLS

No. 6 Concord Academy 87, Gaston Day 19: Gaston Day coasted to a Metrolina Athletic Conference victory, building a 30-0 lead after the first quarter. Five Eagles scored in double figures, led by Justice Alexander’s 21 points.

No. 8 North Lincoln 70, No. 13 East Lincoln 57: The visiting Knights ended East Lincoln’s 58-game conference winning streak, thanks to a 13-3 edge in the third quarter. East Lincoln had led 32-31 at halftime before North Lincoln’s rally. Ally Smith poured in 33 points for North Lincoln (15-1, 7-0 Western Foothills 3A). Maddie Matz’s 12 points topped East Lincoln (13-4, 6-1).

No. 10 Providence Day 53, Charlotte Latin 40: Ginny Anne Dumont scored 14 points, as the Chargers remained second in the CISAA.

Lincoln Charter 50, Mountain Island Charter 24: Lincoln Charter improved to 7-0 in the Catawba Shores 1A-2A, behind 16 points from Taylor Riggenbach.

BOYS

No. 2 Providence Day 59, Charlotte Latin 43: Nick Hailey scored 14 points in leading the Chargers past their CISAA foes. Providence Day (20-4, 5-0) raced to a 31-13 halftime lead in its ninth consecutive win. Alex Dauska topped Charlotte Latin (10-10, 2-3) with 23 points.

No. 4 Concord Academy 76, Gaston Day 64: Concord Academy broke open a close Metrolina Athletic Conference game with a 13-3 run in the third quarter. Jake Benham scored a game-high 28 points for Concord Academy (24-3), while Lincoln Raper added 15. Dyland Bradley (22 points) and DeShaun Coulter (17) topped the Spartans.

Tuesday’s #BIG5 top performers

Justice Alexander, Concord Academy girls: Alexander had a game-high 21 points in a win over Gaston Day.

Jake Benham, Concord Academy boys: Benham had a game-high 28 points in a 78-64 conference win over Gaston Day.

Nick Hailey, Providence Day boys: Hailey had a team-high 14 points in a 59-43 win over CISAA rival Charlotte Latin.

Ben Heavner, North Lincoln boys: Heavner had a game-high 18 points in a 71-49 win over East Lincoln.

Ally Smith, North Lincoln girls: Smith had 33 points in a 70-57 win over East Lincoln that ended the Mustangs’ 58-game conference win streak.

Wednesday’s preview

(boys) No. 6 Mooresville (15-2, 5-0 Greater Metro 4 4A) at No. 1 Lake Norman (16-1, 5-0), around 7:30 p.m. — This might be the best game in the state this week. The teams are local rivals, and they have the talent to go a long, long way in the playoffs. The visiting Blue Devils make their shots count, as they’re averaging nearly 50% from the floor this season. Tre McKinnon (18.4 ppg) leads a Lake Norman team that is loaded with Division I talent.

Thursday’s previews

(girls) Monroe (8-2, 4-0 Rocky River 2A-3A) at Forest Hills (13-2, 5-0), 6 p.m. — Monroe’s Janiyah Boyd has burst onto the scene in a big way, averaging nearly 32 points a game in her freshman season and leading the Redhawks. Forest Hills is a contrast to Monroe, featuring a balanced attack in which four starters average between 10 and 14 points a game.

(boys) Monroe (5-0, 4-0) at Forest Hills (7-9, 4-1), 7:30 p.m. — As is the case with the girls’ game, the boys’ contest between these two neighborhood rivals is a battle for first place. In this case, Monroe started its season late, as several basketball players were members of the state-title football team. But the Redhawks are soaring, with junior Bryson Simpkins (13.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg) leading the way. Three juniors — Cam Winnegan, Amari Melton and Jahmarion Mingo — are averaging in double figures.
