Seven new teams join the NC statewide polls, including Chambers after its huge upset win

Seven new teams join the N.C statewide high school basketball rankings this week.

The rankings are sponsored by The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer of Raleigh. They are compiled by longtime N.C. basketball experts Rick Lewis and Alex Bass, who are co-hosts of The Observer’s streaming “Talking Preps” show.

This week, two teams join the girls’ rankings, both in the 4A poll.

Rolesville (8-6) is the reigning NCHSAA state champion and is starting to rebound from a midseason slump that saw it lose five of seven games. Chapel Hill (12-3) has won three in a row and five of its past six games.

There are five new boys’ teams:

One of the five programs is in the private school poll, which groups together all schools regardless of classification. The new team is Greenfield School (20-7). Greenfield, located in Wilson, has won seven straight games.

In the 4A poll, Chambers and West Forsyth join the rankings. Chambers (11-6) upset Christ School at home Saturday, ending the nationally ranked Greenies’ 25-game win streak. West Forsyth (15-2) has won nine of its past 10 games.

Salisbury joins the 2A poll this week. After a 1-3 start, the Hornets have won 12 straight games, led by senior Myles Smith, who averages 21.4 points per game.

Finally, College Prep and Leadership Academy joins the 1A poll. Located in Jamestown, the Royals (14-2) are on a four-game win streak, led by senior Robert Knotts (14.9 ppg) and sophomore Tyrie Pressley (12.6).
