Tuesday’s boys’ rewind: Following coach’s death, Myers Park gets emotional victory

It would’ve been understandable for Myers Park High’s basketball team to be distracted in Tuesday’s SoMeck 4A conference game at Palisades.

A former coach at Myers Park had died in a car accident on Friday, and the team grieved over his death.

Zailan Peeler, 25, was a 2017 Myers Park graduate who helped coach the Mustangs after a college basketball career.

The team learned of his death after Friday’s 72-30 home win over Ballantyne Ridge, first-year Myers Park head coach Andrew Glover said.

“We’ve had a really emotional few days,” Glover said. “He had worked out with all of our guys, so we’ve been through a lot.”

In Tuesday’s game, Myers Park fell behind early then had to hold off the host Pumas late for a 54-52 that keeps the Mustangs at the top of a congested league race.

Myers Park improved to 10-10 overall and 6-2 in a league where five of the seven teams were separated by one game entering Tuesday.

Senior guard Bram Early led the Mustangs with 18 points with Ayo Awosanya adding 13, Josh Hines 10 and Loch Brezeault nine.

Early’s nine points in the second quarter helped spark a rally from a 16-8 first quarter deficit.

But after Myers Park roared ahead 40-28 late in the third quarter, Palisades (11-9, 4-4) closed within 51-50 with 59 seconds left and had the game’s last shot before the Mustangs turned the Pumas away. Hines’ 3-pointer with 45 seconds left pushed Myers Park’s lead back up to 54-50.

“We’ve had to come together as a team and stay together,” said Glover, whose team is now off until a Feb. 4 home game against Ardrey Kell. “It’s a tragic loss. I’m really proud of our resolve.”

Matthew Dillard’s 16 points led Palisades.
