Girls’ rewind: Upset Friday! Providence Day stops Cannon, North Meck beats Mallard Creek

North Mecklenburg’s girls’ high school basketball team brought its defense to Mallard Creek on Friday night.

The Vikings, No. 4 in The Sweet 16, upset the No. 3 Mavericks 47-35, limiting the state championship contenders to a season low in points. In fact, it was the fewest points Mallard Creek had scored in a game since losing 50-32 to East Rutherford two years ago.

“It was motivation from the last game,” North Meck sophomore center Lenise Joseph said. “We had that game, it was really us against us. I feel like that fueled us to come into this game. On top of that, it was just executing and communicating with each other.”

After losing to Mallard Creek, 54-52, at home a few weeks ago, North Mecklenburg (17-2, 8-1 Queen City) needed a win Friday to stay close to the Mavericks (17-3, 8-1) in the league championship race.

Joseph, a finalist for N.C. Ms. Basketball, the state’s player of the year award, made sure the Vikings got it.

She had a game-high 25 points and 17 rebounds to go with a swarming defense that never let Mallard Creek get comfortable.

North Meck held Mallard Creek to five points — all free throws — in the second quarter, and only nine points in the third quarter.

North Meck caused Mallard Creek to turn the ball over multiple times. On top of that, every shot attempt from Mallard Creek was heavily contested by North Meck’s suffocating defense.

“We love to start with defense,” Joseph said. “Defense first and then turn our defense into offense.”

North Meck’s victory extends its nine-game winning streak and ends Mallard Creek’s win streak at seven.

North Meck will host West Meck and Mallard Creek will travel to Harding University on Tuesday.

Providence Day’s girls upset No. 1 Cannon School

Providence Day’s girls celebrate their upset win over No. 1 Cannon School Friday night Special to The Observer

In order for Providence Day to beat Cannon School on Friday night at home, Chargers coach Josh Springer figured his team had to handle the Cougars’ pressure better than it had been doing, and he figured that his team needed to limit the Cougars’ three-point shooting as well as the Cougars’ offensive rebounding.

Playing in front of a packed home crowd on Teacher Appreciation Night and “Lil’ Dribbler Night,” a promotion that draws hundreds of younger lower school kids, the Chargers did everything Springer wanted. That helped Providence Day knock off the No. 1 team in The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll.

And Providence Day’s 42-40 win came after the Chargers trailed 14-3 in the first quarter.

In four of its past six games, Cannon had scored at least 75 points, including 88 against Charlotte Country Day on Thursday night.

Springer said, “Against a team like Cannon, it can get away from you in a hurry. But our composure has gotten better, just handling the ball and finding the open person. I know that sounds simple. But we did that, and we attacked the basket with a lot of confidence and defensively we played the angles really well.”

Springer’s team ended the first quarter down 14-6 and it was down 20-17 at halftime. The Chargers continued their push in the third quarter, outscoring Cannon 18-11 to gain a 35-31 lead. From there, the Chargers held on, led by 16 points from Ginny Anne Dumont. Jakaila Gaskin (15 points) and Madison Drayton (12) led Cannon, the reigning Sweet 16 champion.

The Chargers (22-7, 7-1) ended Cannon’s four-game win streak and became the first traditional N.C. high school to beat the Cougars this season. No. 1 Cannon (21-7, 7-1) fell into a first-place tie with Providence Day in the CISAA standings.

Cannon had won the past five meetings between the teams, including a 69-50 win earlier this month and a 62-51 win in the NCISAA 4A state championship game 11 months ago. In fact, it had been two years since the 17-time NCISAA state champions had beaten Cannon School.

“We’ve got a storied tradition,” Springer said, “but the last few years, they’ve done an outstanding job of building a great program. They got us up there the first time (this season), but tonight, our crowd was phenomenal. They crushed us behind (the 3-point line) the first time, but we did a good job finding the shooters tonight, and limiting them. I just couldn’t be prouder of Charger Nation tonight.”
