Tuesday’s boys’ rewind: Olympic honors former great on night when fans’ behavior mars game

In a game marred by several incidents in the stands during the first half, Olympic High’s boys basketball team held off an upset bid from Palisades on a night when it retired former Trojans’ star Josh Banks’ jersey.

Olympic guard JD Terrell’s free throws with 20 seconds left secured a 67-64 victory.

Terrell’s heroics came after the game was stopped twice due to some verbal and at least one physical incident among people in the stands, which led to police escorting at least one student out of the building. There was an additional incident after the game.

After all of that, Olympic (15-5, 6-3 SoMECK) won its second straight game and stayed alive in the league championship race. Palisades (11-11, 4-6) lost its third straight game.

After losing a 21-point halftime lead, Olympic needed the big shots from Terrell to secure the win.

“Staying calm and wanting to win,” Terrell said about his thoughts at the free throw line.

Palisades got back into the game by clamping down on defense and outscoring Olympic 22-9 in the third quarter to cut the lead to eight.

In the final minutes of the game, Palisades guard Brighton Lester scored back-to-baskets to bring the Pumas within two, at 65-63.

But Palisades’ physical play cost them two fouls that sent Terrell to the line and with 20 seconds left on the clock.

Lester had a corner 3, but time expired while the ball was in his hand. The shot, however, went in.

“It came down to defense,” Terrell said. “Shots are not always going to fall but you can control what you can control. That’s the defensive end. It came down to getting stops late in the game.”

Terrell finished with 16 points and teammates Maurice Sabb had 19 points and DeAngelo Hall 13.

Lester led Palisades with 14 points.

Banks’ jersey was retired during a ceremony during the game. Banks, who graduated in 2020, was a two-time All-Charlotte Observer player who was first team all-state as a senior, when he averaged 24 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. He was also a two-time SoMECK player of the year. After high school, Banks started his college career at Virginia Commonwealth before transferring to UNC-Asheville. A fifth-year senior now, Banks is averaging 15.1 points for the Bulldogs, third-best on the team.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story has been changed to include the Josh Banks jersey retirement, and add details surrounding the off-court altercations that occurred during the game.

Myers Park upsets Ardrey Kell, takes over first place

Myers Park took sole possession of first place in the SoMeck 4A boys’ basketball race Tuesday night, and the Mustangs did it emphatically.

They raced to a 19-6 first-quarter lead and never looked back, trouncing No. 9 Ardrey Kell 77-47.

The victory left Myers Park (11-10, 7-2) atop the conference with three games remaining. Ardrey Kell (17-4, 6-3), South Mecklenburg (12-9, 6-3) and Olympic (15-5, 6-3) are tied for second.

Bram Early, a 6-1 senior guard, led Myers Park with 15 points.

Nearly everything seemed to go right for the Mustangs. Early in the fourth quarter, a loose ball landed in Early’s hands as he was moving toward the basket. He somehow made an off-balance, one-handed shot that went in.

And nearly everything seemed to go wrong for Ardrey Kell.

In one fourth-quarter stretch, the Knights were outscored 16-3, committed four turnovers, and missed a pair of layups.

Myers Park’s lead reached 20 points (56-36) early in the fourth quarter on two free throws by Loch Brezeault, who finished with 14 points.

The lead reached 30 (69-39) midway in the period on a Josh Hines basket.

Brett Freeman was the only Ardrey Kell scorer in double figures, finishing with 17 points.
