Cardinal Gibbons beats Hickory Ridge to win first NCHSAA dual team wrestling state title

Cardinal Gibbons won its first NCHSAA dual team wrestling championship Saturday in Greensboro, beating Hickory Ridge 41-22 in the 4A final.

Hickory Ridge was the only team from The Observer’s coverage area to make the finals.

Elsewhere, Union Pines won its first state title, beating Pisgah 47-17 in 3A. Union Pines made its fourth finals appearance. R-S Central beat Seaforth 34-32 in 2A and Uwharrie Charter won its third straight 1A title, beating Mount Airy 48-15.

In the 4A final, Cardinal Gibbons, which lost in the 2020 state final, got a pin from championship MVP Liam Hickey to start the match in the 144-pound weight class and got rolling.

Cardinal Gibbons got a technical fall win from Ryan Thompson at 165 plus pins at 106 (Luke Richards) and 138 (Alexander Rodriguez).

Hickory Ridge got pins from Colton Campbell at 190 and Damien Couture at 285. The Ragin’ Bulls were in the finals for the first time.

Union Pines’ fourth straight appearance in the state finals was the charm, as the school claimed its first dual meet state championship. The Vikings won the first seven matches for a 31-0 lead and were never headed.

2A finals

R-S Central edged Seaforth 34-32 Saturday at the Novant Health Fieldhouse to win the program’s first dual team wrestling state championship.

The match came down to the final bout as Seaforth held a 32-31 lead going into the 138-pound matchup. R-S Central’s Cayden Laws earned a takedown with just over a minute to go in the third period to take the 8-7 lead and he maintained control.

Uwharrie Charter picked up its fourth NCHSAA 1A Dual Team Wrestling Championship — and its third in three years – as the school defeated Mount Airy 48-15 in the small school class. The Eagles won the first five bouts and the last five bouts as they controlled the match.
