Lake Norman Charter sweeps NCHSAA 3A swim championships in Cary on Friday night

Lake Norman Charter swimmers dominated the pool Friday night at the Triangle Aquatic Club in Cary, sweeping the 3A boys’ and girls’ swim and diving state championships.

It was the second straight 3A state crown for the girls, while the boys dethroned three-time 3A champ Carrboro.

Each of the teams won by comfortable margins, with the Knights’ girls outpointing second-place Central Cabarrus 360-195, and the boys topping runner-up Carrboro 256.5-170.

Lake Norman Charter’s boys captured the state championship without winning an event.

Instead, the Knights won it with depth. They finished second in the 400 freestyle relay, third in the 200 freestyle relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay. Neil Hart took third in the 100 backstroke and fourth in the 200 individual medley. And Alex Stinson swam third in the 200 freestyle.

The Knights’ girls piled up points in the relays. They won the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays and were second in the 200 freestyle relay. Lily Price, Skye Yampolskty and Campbelle Cyrus were members of both winning teams, with Cyrus swimming anchor legs on both first-place squads.

Other highlights from the 3A meet:

Central Cabarrus’ Abbey Cronin became a three-time winner in the 100 backstroke, winning by a comfortable margin Friday night. She also swam on a victorious 200 freestyle relay team.

Concord’s Lily Hermans won both the 50 and 100 freestyle races.

North Lincoln had a pair of boys’ winners, in Aiden DeLuca (200 IM) and Jackson Kroh (100 butterfly). Kroh also was second in the 100 backstroke.

Other area winners were the Forestview 200 medley relay team; the South Point 200 freestyle relay team; East Lincoln’s Rider Warner (100 backstroke); and Tellis Bumgarner (100 freestyle) of Central Cabarrus.
