Myers Park has had a dominant run against East Mecklenburg over the past 12 years, and the Mustangs kept it going in a baseball season opener for both teams Monday night.

Behind all-conference pick Davis Johnson, the Mustangs blanked the Eagles, 9-0, to push their win streak in the series to 21 games, dating back to 2013.

Johnson started Monday’s game at pitcher and allowed just one hit and struck out three over two innings. He also got the Mustangs started with a two-run double in the second inning, had three hits, reached base four times and scored three runs.

Myers Park could only muster seven hits, but was able to take advantage of multiple East Mecklenburg miscues and limit the Eagles to just two hits to get the win.

The Mustangs surrendered just two hits while striking out seven Eagles.

Three who mattered

Gabe Johnson, East Mecklenburg: Johnson started the season opener, struck out five and allowed five runs, just one of which was earned over four innings.

Davis Johnson, Myers Park: Johnson started on the mound, struck out three and allowed just one hit. He was also 3-for-3 at the plate with two doubles, a walk and three runs scored.

Eagles’ errors: East Mecklenburg committed six errors, had a passed ball, walked four and had two-base running blunders that led to multiple Myers Park unearned runs.

They said it

“Game 1 was a team effort,” said Myers Park coach Erik Foor, who entered his 10th season. “We have a pretty deep, young roster and I told these guys since Day 1 in the fall it’s going to be a game of playing together and I think that showed as the game went on.”

What’s next

East Mecklenburg (0-1) hosts Berry Academy Wednesday, while Myers Park (1-0) travels to Hoggard on Friday.
