Two teams from Wilmington among 7 new schools in NC statewide prep basketball rankings

Seven new teams joined the N.C. statewide high school basketball rankings this week.

The rankings are sponsored by The Charlotte Observer and the News & Observer and are compiled by longtime N.C. basketball experts Alex Bass and Rick Lewis, co-hosts of The Observer’s “Talking Preps” streaming show.

There are three new teams in the boys’ rankings, and they are all in the 4A poll: Mount Tabor (17-4), Sanderson (18-3) and Hoggard (18-3).

Mount Tabor, from Winston-Salem, has won seven straight games and 10 of its past 11. Sanderson, from Raleigh, has won four straight, to take a two-game lead in the CAP-6 conference. It can win the league title outright by beating rival Cardinal Gibbons Tuesday. Finally, Hoggard, from Wilmington, has won 10 of its last 11, led by junior Will Seward (15.1 ppg), sophomore Hunter McGrath (14.1) and senior Lawson Brown (12.1).

In the girls’ rankings, there are four new teams.

Charlotte Latin joins the NCISAA rankings, led by junior Charlotte Tune (15.3 ppg).

Wilmington’s Hoggard’s girls, like the boys, joins the 4A poll. The Vikings are 21-1 and have won 12 straight games.

Kinston’s girls return to the 3A poll. The Vikings have won five of their past six games.

Albemarle joins the 1A poll. The Bulldogs (18-4) have won nine straight games, including a 58-46 win over Hickory Ridge, No. 10 in the 4A poll.
