Tuesday’s boys’ rewind: Jim Gatehouse, South Meck set up Friday’s league title matchup

South Mecklenburg will play for the SoMECK 4A conference championship later this week.

The Sabres beat Ballantyne Ridge 71-51 on Tuesday night, setting up Friday’s regular-season conference championship game at home against Myers Park.

Myers Park had a four-game win streak snapped Tuesday, when Berry upset the Mustangs at home, 77-71.

That means that South Meck (14-9, 8-3) and Myers Park (12-11, 8-3) are tied for first heading into Friday’s regular-season finale.

On Tuesday, South Meck won its third straight game, rallying from a 30-26 halftime deficit with a monster third quarter.

The Sabres outscored Ballantyne Ridge 33-13 in that eight-minute period.

Jim Gatehouse led the Sabres with 25 points for the game and Ben Houpt added 18. Junior Jimmy Neubauer led Ballantyne Ridge (2-22, 0-12) with 19 points.

Tuesday’s #BIG5 top performers

Tarris Bouie, Chambers: Bouie had 25 points, 14 rebounds, six assists and three blocks in a 73-66 win over West Charlotte.

Nick Diaz, Charlotte Country Day: The Senior guard had a career-high 31 points in his final game, a 77-63 loss to Raleigh Ravenscroft in the first round of the NCISAA 4A playoffs. Diaz, who will play in the NCISAA all-star game March 1, also had four rebounds, two steals as well as an assist.

Judah Freeman, Hough: In a 60-57 win over Harding, Freeman scored 21 points and hauled in 10 rebounds.

Brycen Redmon, Westminster Catawba: In a 70-63 victory over Freedom Christian, Redmon had 24 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Josh Yates, Lake Norman: Yates had a game-high 20 points in a 72-28 win over South Iredell.

Tuesday’s capsules

No. 1 Lake Norman 72, South Iredell 28: Josh Yates’ 20 points led the Wildcats (22-1, 11-0 Greater Metro 4A), who led 49-15 at halftime. Lake Norman finishes the regular season Friday against rival and No. 6-ranked Mooresville.

No. 6 Mooresville 88, A.L. Brown 34: The visiting Blue Devils (20-3, 10-1 Greater Metro 4A) got 19 points from Eian Bailey in this lopsided victory. Kyri Wilson had eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals.

No. 7 Gaston Christian 78, Fayetteville Christian 33: Gaston Christian cruised to victory in its opening NCISAA Class 3A playoff contest. The Eagles will host Asheville School on Thursday in the second round.

No. 8 Independence 71, Rocky River 49: The Patriots led 49-41 after three quarters in this Southwestern 4A contest, but they pulled away by outscoring the Ravens 22-8 in the final period. Independence is 9-2 in the conference, a half-game behind Charlotte Catholic (10-2). The Patriots can gain a share of the Southwestern 4A regular-season title by beating neighborhood rival Butler at home Friday. Kaleb Jasper scored 21 points for the Patriots, and Jaxon Neely added 16. Jayden Ross topped Rocky River with 19 points.

No. 10 Queen’s Grant Charter 68, Carolina International 56: The Stallions improved to 9-0 in the Metro 1A and clinched the regular-season championship. Carolina International falls to 7-2.

No. 11 Charlotte Catholic 63, East Mecklenburg 57: The Cougars clinched at least a share of the Southwestern 4A regular-season championship, finishing 10-2 in the league. Chris Eagan led the Cougar attack with 21 points, and Jack Siegel added 17.

No. 13 Ardrey Kell 49, Olympic 47: The Knights (7-4 SoMeck 4A) remained third in their conference, as Brett Freeman scored on a game-winning put-back shot with three seconds remaining. Freeman finished with 17 points, and Braden Suggs added 14.

No. 15 Jay M. Robinson 65, Central Cabarrus 53: David Frazier had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Da’Montre Harlee added 15 points for the South Piedmont 3A regular-season champs.

No. 16 Chambers 73, West Charlotte 66: Tarris Bouie III scored 25 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, and dished out six assists as the Cougars improved to 10-3 in the Queen City 3A-4A and clinched the No. 2 berth in next week’s conference tournament. Markus Kerr added 24 points.

Ashbrook 81, North Gaston 59: Amaijah Nixon scored seven points in the second quarter, when the Green Wave outscored North Gaston 27-13 for a 38-24 halftime lead. The Green Wave, now 12-1 in the Big South 3A, can do no worse than finish in a tie for first place.

Cannon School 80, Rabun Gap School 76: The Cougars (15-11) won their first-round game in the NCISAA 4A playoffs and will travel to top-seeded and defending 4A state champ Christ School on Friday. Rabun Gap led 72-67 midway in the fourth quarter, but Sean Nix hit back-to-back 3-point shots, and Cannon School took a 73-72 lead. Rabun Gap battled back for a 76-75 edge, but Nix made three free throws in the final minute for the victory.

Concord 77, Northwest Cabarrus 64: Concord moved into a second-place tie in the South Piedmont 3A, with a 10-5 conference mark. The Spiders are tied with Northwest Cabarrus.

Corvian Community 73, Pine Lake Prep 49: The Cardinals (16-6, 11-2 Catawba Shores 1A-2A) remained in a tie for first place, shooting 52 percent from the floor. R.J. Moore Jr. led Corvian with 23 points and seven rebounds. Joseph Bruce scored 13 for Pine Lake Prep (17-6, 9-4).

East Lincoln 61, North Iredell 58: Christian Atkins scored 17 points, and Jackson Fannon added 15 for the Mustangs in their Western Foothills 3A triumph. East Lincoln is now 10-3 in the conference, a game behind North Lincoln.

Gaston Day 79, O’Neal School 25: The Spartans (20-10) cruised to victory and will be home against Fayetteville Academy in a second-round game Thursday.

Hough 60, Harding 57: Judah Freeman’s 21 points and 10 rebounds led the Huskies to a Queen City 3A-4A victory, Jadah Freeman had 11 rebounds.

Hunter Huss 94, Stuart Cramer 58: Jaleel Smith’s 27 points led the Huskies to a Big South 3A romp. Zii Phillips added 26 points, hitting five 3-pointers.

Maiden 103, Lincolnton 96 (2 OT) — Maiden outscored the visiting Wolves 13-6 in the second overtime of this big Catawba Valley 2A contest. The outcome left the teams tied for the lead at 11-2, with one game remaining.

Monroe 75, Central Academy 35: Bryson Simpkins’ 16 points lifted the Redhawks to a Rocky River 2A-3A victory. Monroe put 10 players in the scoring column. The victory, couple with Forest Hills’ upset loss at Anson County, left Monroe atop the confeence at 9-2. Forest Hills, which plays Monroe on

North Lincoln 87, West Iredell 71: The visiting Knights (11-2 Western Foothills 3A) remained atop the conference, as Ty Sanders scored 23 points, and Kellen Karr added 18. Ben Heaver scored 14 points, and Beckett Rinkus added 13.

Ravenscroft School 77, Charlotte Country Day 63: Nick Diaz scored a career-high 31 points in his final high school game, as the Buccaneers (16-14) lost in the first round of the NCISAA 4A playoffs. Chance Gladden scored 27 for Ravenscroft.

SouthLake Christian 75, Carolina Day 58: The Eagles (13-15) will travel to High Point Christian on Thursday in the second round of the NCISAA’s 3A playoffs.

Asheville School is led by 6-9 junior Heimar Helgason, who had 23 points and eight rebounds against Gaston Christian in December. But the Blues had no answer for Gaston Christian’s Cameron Newman, who totaled 24 points, six rebounds and nine assists.

(Boys) SouthLake Christian (13-15) at High Point Christian (15-12), 6 p.m. (second round, NCISAA 3A playoffs) — SouthLake Christian might be catching the Cougars at a good time, as High Point Christian has lost seven of its last nine games. The Eagles are coming off a 75-58 first-round victory over Carolina Day.

(Boys) Fayetteville Academy (22-9) at Gaston Day (20-10), 6 p.m. (second round, NCISAA 2A playoffs) — This is a rematch of a Nov. 16 game that Fayetteville Academy won 72-65. The Spartans need to put the brakes on Fayetteville Academy’s Dorian Tatum, who scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half in that November game.
