Hough taps former player with famous name as next head boys’ basketball coach
Former Hough High School boys’ basketball player Beau Maye is going to coach at his alma mater.
Maye is expected to graduate with a master’s degree from North Carolina in May, and Hough athletic director Lori DeMarcus said Maye will start at Hough in the fall.
Maye, who had nine knee surgeries during his basketball career, played for Jason Grube at Hough, where he averaged nearly 15 points and eight rebounds and was named all-conference in the 2019-20 season. He graduated with a 4.3 grade-point average and played at North Carolina as a walk-on in the 2022-23 season.
His father, Mark, was a star quarterback at Independence High School and at North Carolina. His brother, Drake, was also a star quarterback at North Carolina and is currently playing for the New England Patriots.
At Hough, Beau Maye will replace Dan Larkin as basketball coach. Larkin coached at the school for two years, but was not a teacher on campus. Larkin has a new job that requires him to be in the office five days a week.
“Mr. (David) Farley, the principal and I feel like Beau Maye is the best person to establish the Hough basketball program and bring it back to prominence,” DeMarcus said. “He lives eight minutes from the school and he loves Hough High School as much as we love Hough High School.”
