South Meck stops rival Myers Park in SoMECK baseball final

South Mecklenburg High’s baseball team ended the regular season on a three-game losing streak, including two losses to conference champion Myers Park.

Despite the losses, the Sabres found a way to knock off Myers Park to claim the SoMeck 4A conference tournament title Thursday.

Much like the first two matchups, Myers Park took a commanding lead, but this time South Meck rallied to win, 8-4.

After South Meck’s Jack Devitt scored the first run of the game in the top of the third, Myers Park built its lead.

Mustangs players Evan Howard and Gary Anderson were batted in by William Jordan’s double to score two runs. William Washburn’s bunt allowed Jordan to score a run and Washburn eventually crossed home plate to put the Mustangs up 4-1.

Myers Park pitcher Thomas Jokinen helped the Mustangs jump to an early lead by striking out eight batters until stepping off the mound at the top of the fifth.

Once Jokinen left, South Meck immediately took advantage and scored two runs, from Chase Bremer and Andrew Gerow.

Later, South’s Pete Halstead and Christian Gregg scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning off hits from Charlie Doherty and Gerow.

Lauten Mehalic, the tournament MVP, came up clutch for South Meck as he closed out the game with strikeouts and hit a double to bring in Reese Guertin, Chris Short and Devitt to seal the victory.

“I was thinking the entire game is just make sure that I contribute to this game and do what I can,” Mehalic said after the game. “In this case that was getting that clutch double and pitching on the mound as hard as I could.”
