Prep roundup: Mallard Creek dominates 4A Western Regional track

Mallard Creek’s boys took a runaway win at the N.C. 4A Western Regional track championships in Charlotte on Saturday.

The Mavericks won all four boys’ relay events and got two hurdles wins from Nyan Brown en route to dominating the field.

Mallard Creek had 158.5 points. Watauga was second with 47 and Palisades third with 43.

Watauga’s girls finished with 112 points to take the girls title over Mallard Creek (102) and Myers Park (81).

The N.C. 4A state finals will be next weekend in Greensboro.

Individual highlights

Mallard Creek’s Brown won, narrowly in the 110 hurdles, running a time of 14.36 to edge teammate Roderick Orr (14.66). In the 300 hurdles, Brown was dominant, running a 37.06, well ahead of teammate Caleb Knight (38.67).

Independence’s Maya Love won the 100 and 200 on the girls’ side.

Rocky River’s Alexandria Jefferson won the discus and shot put, both by a comfortable margin. She threw 142-3 in the discus, well ahead of Olympic’s Amiya Burch (108-0). In the shot put, Jefferson threw 43-6, beating Alexander Central’s Ali Lewis (34-9).

Greensboro’s Dudley High won the girls and boys team titles. The boys finished with 116 points, well ahead of Lake Norman Charter (73.5) and Oak Grove (68). Dudley’s girls had 141.5 points, overwhelming the field. Piedmont (67) was second and Northwest Cabarrus (55) was third.

West Charlotte’s 400 girls relay team won the regional title. The Lions quartet included Chloe Stitt, Mya Horsley, McKinley Sutton and Jase Matthews.
