On big night for area runners, Corvian wins NCHSAA 1A state track title

On a big night for three Observer-area runners, Corvian Community’s boys team won the NCHSAA 1A state track and field meet at N.C. A&T in Greensboro.

Corvian finished with 62 points, 10 ahead of Winston-Salem’s Carver High and Mountain Island Charter from Gaston County.

Swain County won the girls event with 97 points. Corvian was second with 75 and Huntersville’s Christ The King (54) was third and Mountain Island Charter (50) fourth.

Corvian Community’s Carson Williams won two events, taking the 800 meters by nearly 2 seconds and narrowly edging Northside’s Andrew Harding in the 1,600. He also ran on Corvian’s winning 3,200-meter relay team.

Mountain Island Charter’s Olivia Patterson won the girls’ 100 and was second in the 200. She also ran on her team’s victorious 400- and 800-meter relay teams.

Corvian Community dominated in the girls’ 100 hurdles where Jayda Lewis won the event ahead of teammates Mariana Askew and Misa Samuel. Lewis finished second in the 300 hurdles.

The Tuckers from Concord have memorable runs in 3A

Cameron Tucker of Concord’s Jay M. Robinson had a big day in the 3A finals, winning the 200 and 400 meters. His sister, Coryn Tucker, finished second in the 200 and third in the 400.

Statesville’s boys won the 800- and 1,600-meter relay events.

North Lincoln’s Olivia Ferraro won the girls’ 1,600-meters. She was the only Observer-area girls’ winner in the 3A event.

Greensboro’s Dudley High won the girls’ event with 81 points, well ahead of Northside and North Lincoln, which each had 38 points. Dudley also won the boys’ championship with 88 points, well ahead of Statesville (48) and Croatan (44).

Dudley’s girls won their third straight state title. The boys won for the second year in a row.
