Lake Norman lacrosse beats Charlotte Catholic, advances in playoffs
Lake Norman boys escaped Charlotte Catholic’s comeback attempt to advance to the 4A state lacrosse semifinals Thursday afternoon.
Despite Charlotte Catholic’s late scoring, Lake Norman walked away with a 13-11 victory.
Lake Norman, the No. 1 overall seed in the western playoffs, will host the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal between Hough and Northwest Guilford.
Lake Norman overcame a huge threat from Catholic to advance.
Thursday’s matchup started fast, as both teams traded 11 goals to end the first quarter with Lake Norman leading 7-4.
Lake Norman continued to scores and lock down Charlotte Catholic for the entire second quarter. The Wildcats increased their lead to 9-4 in the third quarter.
Charlotte Catholic freshman Cole Sovie broke the Cougars’ scoring drought at the end of the third quarter, making the Cougars’ first goal since the 8:00 mark in the first quarter.
Charlotte Catholic kept up its hot pace, scoring four unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to get within one, at 12-11.
But Lake Norman tightened up their defense and played keep-away in the final two minutes. The Wildcats also added an insurance goal.
Lake Norman Statton Rehrer said teamwork led the teamto finish the game.
“We’re together, we work as a team, fight together,” he said. “The chemistry we had is work we worked for all year.”
Rehrer and Cannon Wigginton both achieved hat tricks for Lake Norman.
THREE WHO MADE A DIFFERENCE
Statton Rehrer, Lake Norman: Rehrer scored three goals in the first quarter.
Cannon Wigginton, Lake Norman: Wigginton scored three goals, including a clutch goal in the fourth quarter.
Brendan Leonard, Charlotte Catholic: Leonard scored a hat trick for the Cougars.
