‘His dreams came true.’ After long wait, Ardrey Kell’s Brett Freeman heads to ACC
Ardrey Kell High boys’ basketball coach Mike Craft said star senior guard Brett Freeman, who committed to Virginia Tech Tuesday, has been awfully patient.
Freeman, a 6-foot-5 senior guard, had the type of year — once upon a time — that would’ve had college coaches knocking down his door.
He averaged 24.2 points for the season, setting a new a school record. He scored 49 points in a game, setting another school record, and Freeman scored more than 40 in another game. He was player of the year in his conference. He made first-team all-district and made the All-Observer regional team.
He took some calls and took some visits to big-time schools, but....
“We had so many schools call and talk to him and many came to see him,” Craft said, “but for one reason or another, it just didn’t happen.”
Craft said Freeman’s dream was to play in the ACC and he kept urging Freeman and his father to be patient, believing that the right offer would come.
“Nobody’s recruiting seniors,” Craft said, “and I talked to he and his dad on several occasions. He was putting up such good numbers and not getting the offers he wanted. But he and his dad were patient and he kept grinding away and kept listening.”
And finally, Tuesday happened. After working with the Hokies’ coaches for awhile, Freeman finally committed to an ACC school.
“It’s a dream come true for him,” Craft said. “We’re so happy for him. He’s worked so hard for this, and today his prayers were answered.”
