A.L. BROWN

Outlook: The Wonders return eight starters from a team that has won five games in each of the past two seasons. Junior quarterback A.J. Settles will look to get the ball to senior receivers Jameer Langley (43 catches for 548 yards and four touchdowns) and Maddox Langley (two touchdown catches), with senior running back Bryce Morgan (378 yards rushing) also playing a key role. Senior Sabreion Campbell returns to lead the offensive line. The Wonders’ defense starts with senior defensive ends Tucker Farabee (57 tackles) and Montinez Posey up front. The linebacking corps is also in good hands with senior Mason Cook (41 tackles) and junior Dhilyn Hollis (70 tackles) back in the lineup. Senior Gavin Yow (76 tackles) is the most experienced player in the secondary.

Note: The Wonders are 21-22 in the last four seasons combined, going 5-5 in 2021, 6-5 in 2022, and 5-6 each of the past two years.

CANNON SCHOOL

Outlook: After three straight winning seasons from 2020-22, going 24-7 in that span, Cannon School has suffered back-to-back losing seasons. The Cougars now have their third head coach in the last four years, with Jamaal Birch taking over the program. Cannon School returns nine starters, including sophomore QB Lucas Lopez (1,450 yards passing, 19 touchdowns as a freshman). Cannon School senior running back Seth Henry (600 yards rushing, 300 yards receiving, eight touchdowns overall), senior receiver Michael Trojan and junior receiver Marcus Sales (Cox Mill transfer, 40 catches last year) will all play key roles. Senior right tackle James Joyce is back to lead the offensive line. The Cannon School defense will feature senior linebackers Quincy Booker (56 tackles) and Brady Ravin (81 tackles, two interceptions), with junior Jackson Laws (69 tackles) leading the defensive line.

Note: First-year head coach Jamaal Birch comes to Cannon School after leading the First Baptist School football program in Charleston, SC. Birch has also been an assistant coach at Oceanside Collegiate Academy (Mount Pleasant, SC) and Providence Day.

CENTRAL CABARRUS

Head Coach: Donnie Kiefer (1st year).

Outlook: The Vikings have won three games in five consecutive seasons and haven’t had a winning season since going 7-5 in 2019. For 2025, coach Donnie Kiefer return to try to get the program back above .500, after going 36-24 from 2012-16 at the school. Central Cabarrus will rely on a strong offensive line with junior Kevin Gilyard and senior Paul Neal hoping to create lanes for senior running back Damonte James. Senior Lucas Rogers and junior Dillon Ryan can play multiple roles for the Vikings at either at quarterback, receiver and defensive back. The Vikings’ defense is also strong up front with junior Infinite Morrow, Gilyard and Neal on the line, while junior Bryson Pate returns at linebacker. Rogers, Ryan and sophomore Aiden Smith give the secondary experience.

Note: Kiefer has 280 wins in his coaching career overall.

CHRIST THE KING

Head Coach: Charlie Jackson (1st Year)

Outlook: The Crusaders return 11 starters from a team that went 5-7 last season. This year, Christ the King features junior quarterback Jamison Ehret (1,520 yards passing, nine touchdowns) along with senior running back Brennan Wallace (6.8 yards per carry) and junior receiver Carter Stevens. The Crusaders’ offensive line has experience with the return of senior Caden Moulton and sophomore left tackle Thomas Semler, who both started every game last season. The defense is led by junior middle linebacker Caden Fritz, who had 130 tackles last season. Fritz is joined by Wallace at linebacker with junior defensive end Juan Casanova (53 tackles, five sacks), leading the way up front.

Note: Christ the King first-year head coach Charlie Jackson, defensive line coach Austin Rowan, and defensive back coach Trey Gowen, all played college football together at East Tennessee State University. Jackson was the defensive coordinator for the Crusaders for the last two seasons.

CONCORD

Head Coach: Darren Shepherd (4th year)

Outlook: The Spiders are 12-18 under Shepherd. This season, Concord looks to get back above .500 in the newly organized South Piedmont conference. Concord has an experienced defensive line, featuring seniors Harrison Grant, Sam Harrington and Tyrell Weatherspoon, a two-time, all-conference pick, leading the group. Seniors Antonio Brown and Elijah Williams return in the secondary. The Spiders’ offense should get a boast from Mount Pleasant transfer and senior quarterback Colin Black (1,171 yards passing, 15 touchdowns last year) along with senior running back/receiver Andrew Davis. Senior team captain Alex Williams is back to anchor the offensive line.

Interesting Note: Concord has only one winning season in the last eight years, going 7-4 in 2021.

COX MILL

Outlook: The Chargers have struggled with only seven wins in the last two seasons combined. This year, with starters returning, Cox Mill hopes to change that. The Chargers will be led by junior receivers Gavin Rameriz and Soine Latimore, along with junior offensive linemen Malachi Bush and Vijesh Dasar. The Chargers’ defense is strong in the middle,with senior linebackers Jacob Moore (77 tackles), junior Adrian Monford and junior defensive lineman, Caleb Dorsett.

Interesting Note: Cox Mill is 24-28 in the past five years. The team’s last winning season was in 2022, when it finished 9-3.

HICKORY RIDGE

Head Coach: Brandon Gentry (1st year).

2024 Record: 0-10, 0-6

Conference: Greater Metro Athletic 6A/7A

Outlook: Hickory Ridge has lost 11 straight games, which includes its 0-10 record last year. This season, the team is optimistic with 11 starters back under new coach Brandon Gentry. The Ragin’ Bulls’ defense will be its strength to start with senior Kingston Young (36 tackles, four sacks) and sophomore Cam Rice, setting the tone up front. The Hickory Ridge secondary returns two starters, sophomore Kennis Kimble and Isaiah Woodburn (34 tackles). The Ragin’ Bulls’ offense will have to reload at most of the skill positions, but can rely on an experience offensive line with senior Isadore Verla and junior Gavin Passino leading the group. Senior receiver Joell Wooten (551 yards receiving, six touchdowns) will also be a key playmaker for the offense.

Note: Gentry comes to the Ragin Bulls after stints at Hopewell, West Cabarrus and Northwest Cabarrus.

Outlook: Jay M. Robinson has been one of the most consistent winners in the state in the past four seasons, going 44-6 in that span, and is coming off back-to-back 12-1 records in the past two years. This season, Robinson returns 10 starters, including senior L.J. Watson (1,100 yards rushing, 18 touchdowns) and sophomore Ennis Stiles (800 yards rushing, six touchdowns) behind a big offensive line, featuring Elijah Shoe (6-5, 285) and Jaidyn Covington (6-2, 270). Junior quarterback Aury Greenfield (500 yards passing, seven touchdowns last year) will direct the offense after showing potential as the backup last year. The Robinson defense is also strong with senior Aiden Black (50 tackles, four sacks) and sophomore Landen Harding (47 tackles, eight sacks) returning. Meanwhile, Stiles will also play a key role at linebacker. The Bulldogs’ secondary is experienced with seniors Cam Tucker (three interceptions, a Division I recruit) and Darius Smith back to lead the way.

Note: Jay M. Robinson sophomore defensive end Landen Harding is ranked as one of the top defensive linemen in the nation in the class of 2028.

MOUNT PLEASANT

Head Coach: Daniel Crosby (4th year).

Outlook: Mount Pleasant returns nine starters from a team that went 9-3 overall and won the Yadkin Valley conference. However, the Tigers will take on a new challenge as it returns to the Rocky River conference for the first time since 2020. The Mount Pleasant offense will feature senior running backs Jacob Reigel (1,679 yards rushing, 20 touchdowns) and Ayden Smith (790 yards rushing). The Tigers have offensive line strength, too, with seniors Brandon Bevilacqua (Central Cabarrus transfer) and Justin Scott along with junior Austin Negre. Scott and Negre started every game last season. The Mount Pleasant defense will rely on senior linebackers Madox Barrier (107 tackles) and Smith with nose guard Jacob McCoy (49 tackles, three sacks).

Note: Coach Daniel Crosby has won 22 games in three seasons at the helm at Mount Pleasant.

NORTHWEST CABARRUS

Outlook: The Trojans have been consistent winners going 28-7 over the past three seasons. In 2025, 10 starters return, including junior quarterback Hudson Irwin (1,025 yards passing, 11 touchdowns). Northwest Cabarrrus will also have a strong run game with senior running back Jarlon Drye (1,315 yards rushing, 15 touchdowns) returning behind a veteran offensive line, featuring seniors Anthony Argueta, Gavin Lewis and Sam Rodriguez. The Northwest Cabarrus’ defense also has experience with senior Terren Miranda and junior Josiah Mitchell returning up front. The Trojans’ secondary is also solid with senior Ja’Ziyah McLean (two interceptions), Keyshaun Barnette, and Casi Barringer (49 tackles), all back in the lineup.

Note: Northwest Cabarrus sophomore tight end Shane Lucas-Walker has a scholarship offer from East Carolina University, according to Trojans’ coach Eric Morman.

WEST CABARRUS

Outlook: Former Hough head coach Matthew Jenkins looks to help West Cabarrus build on its best season in school history (5-6 last year) with 12 starters and 35 lettermen returning to what is easily the most veteran team in the program’s five-year tenure. The Wolverines’ offense will feature senior quarterback Johnta Harrison (391 yards passing), senior receiver Camari McCrae and junior receiver Jayden Reid. All-conference senior Daniel Hutton and junior Kenneth Spencer return to lead the offensive line. The West Cabarrus defense features 335-pound, all-conference senior Aiden McElveen and junior Thomas Strickland up front. Meanwhile, all-conference senior linebacker Kalum Stewart (5.5 sacks) and senior defensive back Flynn Viar will also play key roles.

Note: West Cabarrus coach Matthew Jenkins has 99 career wins, and will have a chance to earn his 100th win in his first year with the Wolverines.
