AMBASSADOR CHRISTIAN

Head Coach: Jay Poag (1st year)

2024 Record: New team this year.

Conference: Independent

Outlook: Ambassador Christian begins its first season with a wealth of talent from other area schools. The Lions’ offense includes sophomore quarterback Michalak, junior running back Kelly (Hickory Ridge transfer), tight end Alderfer (Christ the King transfer) and receivers Dixon (Cannon School transfer) and Echols. Senior Mba (6-3, 320, SouthLake Christian transfer), and junior Grier (6-2, 275, A.L. Brown transfer) give Ambassador Christian size and experience on the offensive line.

The Lions’ defense includes senior Gautier, Grier and Mba to give the line some experience. Meanwhile, junior linebackers Canajeh Boneque (Cox Mill transfer) and J.J. Tompkins (Mallard Creek) will also play key roles. The Lions’ secondary features juniors Deloatch (Weddington transfer),Johnson (Northwest Cabarrus transfer) and Trendyn Williams.

Note: Ambassador Christian will play a regional schedule in their opening season with three teams ranked in the nation’s top 100, according to maxpreps.com.

ARDREY KELL

Outlook: The Knights have averaged nearly eight wins per season during Jachym’s tenure, but slipped to 5-5 a year ago. This season, Ardrey Kell returns 14 starters on a senior-laden team. The Knights’ offense will be led by senior quarterback Curtis, senior running back Rivest (683 yards rushing, seven touchdowns), senior receiver Jones and junior wideout Rodriguez (27 catches, four touchdowns).Harper is back to lead the offensive line. The Ardrey Kell defense also has experience with seniors Aljakhbeer,Mbanya and Sheppard all back on the defensive line. SeniorsBacon and Garmon return as starting linebackers, while classmateSchweigrath, is lone starter back in the secondary.

Note: Ardrey Kell coach Jachym is 45-19 overall in six years as its head coach.

BALLANTYNE RIDGE

Outlook: The Wolves suffered through the usual first-year program struggles, going 0-11 in their inaugural season. This year, there is reason for optimism with all 22 starters returning for new head coach Tyson Fernandez, who was Ballantyne Ridge defensive coordinator last season. Fernandez will look to sophomore Polston to get the ball to playmakers like senior running back/receiver, Owens and sophomore tight end Krause. Yusko, a junior, returns to lead the offensive line. The Wolves’ defensive strength is at linebacker, where junior Gautreaux, sophomore Jones, Krause (all-conference as a freshman) and Owens are all back in the lineup.

Note: Coach Fernandez is the former Rocky River High head coach and Appalachian State football player.

BERRY

Head Coach: Darius Robinson (2nd Year)

2024 Record: 3-7, 1-5

Conference: Greater Metro Athletic 6A/7A

Outlook: The Cardinals have struggled in the last three seasons, going 7-22. This year, Berry looks to be improved with nine starters back as it joins a new Cabarrus County-based conference with Central Cabarrus, Harding, Olympic, AL Brown, Cox Mill, Hickory Ridge and West Cabarrus. The Cardinals’ offense has multiple playmakers like junior running back Zion McGee and a trio of receivers — seniors Britt (two touchdowns) and Gault (two touchdowns) and junior Mensah (four touchdowns). Junior Antwan Davis, a junior, will anchor the offensive line. The Berry defense will feature senior defensive end Taylor (40 tackles, 5.5 sacks). Meanwhile, Britt (two interceptions), McNair (42 tackles, two interceptions) and Smith (43 tackles) all return in the secondary.

Note: Berry’s last winning season came in 2011, when the Cardinals went 7-4 overall.

BONNIE CONE ACADEMY

Head Coach: Sherman Howze (3rd year)

2024 Record: 1-11 (Independent).

Conference: Catawba River 1A/2A/3A Conference/1A.

Outlook: The Eagles struggled through the usual growing pains of a first-year varsity program in 2024, going 1-11 overall. This season, 14 starters return. The Eagles’ offense will feature junior quarterback Newton and senior running back Williams along with an experienced offensive line, including seniors Allangba and Kilumbu, along with juniors Pinnix,Quispe, Robinson and Shaw. Meanwhile, the defense will rely on linebackers Newton and senio Hibbert.

Note: Bonnie Cone Academy will be in a conference, the Catawba River 1A/2A/3A, for the first time in their brief program history.

BUTLER

Head Coach: Brian Hales (1st year)

2024 Record: 4-7, 4-2

Conference: Meck Power 6, 7A/8A

Outlook: Legendary head coach Brian Hales, a co-host of The Observer’s Talking Preps streaming show, spent one year away from the Butler football team, before deciding to return as interim head coach this season. The Bulldogs look to bounce back from an uncharacteristic 4-7 season, their first losing season since the very first as a program in 1997. The Bulldogs will feature junior quarterback Druzbik, junior running back Thomas-Wright (522 yards, seven touchdowns) and senior receivers Pollard and Mitchell. The Butler defense is led by sophomore defensive end Lockwood, who had a breakout freshman season with 87 tackles, including 16 tackles for loss and seven sacks. The Bulldogs’ secondary also had a lot of experience with seniors Dent (107 tackles),. Morris (36 tackles) and Sifford (43 tackles) all returning.

Note: Butler coach Hales, is 131-34 in his tenure as the Bulldogs’ head coach, averaging 10 wins per season in his career.

CHARLOTTE CATHOLIC

Head Coach: Keith Emery (2nd year)

Outlook: The Keith Emery era of Charlotte Catholic football began with a 10-win season and a Southwestern 4A conference title last season. This year, the Cougars take on a new challenge in Southern Carolinas’ conference, where they will try to win another league title. The Charlotte Catholic defense is the team’s strength where senior defensive linemen Abrams and Basrawala (55 tackles, 4.5 sacks, Army commit) and linebacker Keanen Teeter (94 tackles) all return. The Cougars’ secondary has size and speed with seniors Lupinski (58 tackles, 6-foot-3),Garnett and junior Hucko (62 tackles). The Charlotte Catholic offense will need senior running back Nowlan (258 yards rushing) and junior offensive lineman Johnson to step into bigger roles to keep the Catholic rushing attack rolling.

Note: Charlotte Catholic returns to the Southern Carolinas’ conference for the first time since 2020.

COMMUNITY SCHOOL OF DAVIDSON

Head Coach: T.J. Albert (14th year)

2024 Record: 9-4, 6-1

Conference: Catawba Shores’ 2A/3A

Outlook: The Spartans have been consistent, averaging 10 wins each over the last three seasons. This year, the Community School of Davidson offense has plenty of weapons with junior quarterbackSigler (1,016 yards, 10 touchdown passes, Hopewell transfer) leading the unit. Sigler has options like junior tight endAlbert (317 yards receiving), junior receiver Baker and seniorMack. Juniors Woorley and Nowak return to lead the offensive line. The Spartans’ defense will also look to (62 tackles) to play a key role at linebacker, while Baker (28 tackles, four interceptions) and sophomore Sherman return in the secondary.

Interesting NoteAlbert is in his 13th year as the head football for the Community School of Davidson.

CORVIAN CHARTER

Head Coach: Chris Amill (4th year)

2024 Record: 15-1, 7-0

Conference: Catawba Shores’ 2A/3A

Outlook: The reigning 1A state runner-up will have to prove they can reload with only nine starters back from a team that went 15-1 last year. However, coach Amill still has plenty of talent. The Corvian Charter defense will be its strength initially with juniors Fields (36 tackles) and Kamba (79 tackles, 26 tackles for loss, eight sacks) setting the tone for the defensive line. Senior linebacker Summers will also be all over the field making plays, after recording 140 tackles and 21 tackles for loss last season. The Cardinals’ secondary is also experienced with seniors Grier III (36 tackles), McAdoo (38 tackles) and Warren (44 tackles) all returning. The Corvian Charter offense has to reload in a lot of the skill positions, but can rely on a veteran offensive line, featuring seniors Dukes, Fields and Kamba. Senior kicker/punter Peterson, a major Division I recruit, also gives the Cardinals a game-changing weapon on special teams.

Note: Corvian Charter junior defensive tackle Kamba, a four-star recruit, also wants to go to college to major in agriculture to help his father on his farm in his native home of Congo (Africa).

EAST MECKLENBURG

Head Coach: Lennie Sanders (5th year)

2024 Record: 1-9, 1-5

Conference: Southwestern 7A/8A

The Eagles’ defense feature senior defensive endArum (48 tackles, four sacks) and Bailey, III (25 tackles, four interceptions) and senior Crowder give the unit experience in the secondary.

Note: The Eagles have not won more than two games in a season since 2017, when they went 5-7 under coach Barry Shuford.

Outlook: The Wildcats have suffered through 48 straight losses dating back to the 2019 season. However, new head coach Wilson (former Hickory Ridge coach, is looking to bring stability to the program. The Garinger offense will be led by junior running back Pharr, behind an offensive line featuring senior Vasquez, and junior Woods. Sophomore receiver Thompson will also play a key role. The Wildcats’ defense has the most experience in the secondary with seniors Floyd and Watson and sophomore Henderson all returning. The Garinger front seven is led by senior linebacker Parker and sophomore defensive lineman Whitmiere.

Interesting Note: Garinger’s last winning season came in 2010, when the Wildcats went 7-5 overall.

HARDING

Head Coach: Terence Cunningham (1st full year).

2024 Record: 1-9, 0-7

Conference: Greater Metro Athletic 6A/7A

Outlook: Hopewell has struggled in recent years, winning 10 games in the last five years and is coming off back-to-back 3-7 seasons in 2023 and ‘24. But with new head coach Brandon Sneed and a new conference (Greater Charlotte Athletic), the Titans get a fresh start, but also face a challenge with only six starters returning. The Hopewell offense will rely on a big offensive line featuring seniors Cooper (6-foot-1, 300 pounds), McCullum (6-4, 300) andTaylor (5-9, 290), with senior Goudelock stepping in a quarterback. Senior Tselentis and junior Ulosoy are back to lead the offensive line. The Providence defense is strong up front with sophomore defensive tackle Cunningham (major Division I recruit) and junior defensive end Liam Drayton. Senior Bogan returns at linebacker. The Panthers also secondary also has experience featuring Kelly and Shelton.

The Sabres’ offense line also has experience with seniors Baker and Gallant back to lead the group. The South Mecklenburg defense will have to reload a bit, but lean on experienced secondary with Benson, Williams and Varnes as well as junior Bregman all returning. Meanwhile, senior linebacker Evans and junior defensive lineman Rothfuss are back on the front seven.

Note: South Mecklenburg will not have a home game this season with part of the Sabres’ athletic complex under construction. Outlook: The defending 3A state champions return 18 starters and 41 overall lettermen. The Lions’ offense, which averaged 39 points per game last year, features junior quarterback and 3A state championship most valuable player Nichol. Also back are senior receivers“K.D.” Cotton (Duke University commit), Finch (Air Force Academy commit, also a tight end) and Jones (Charlotte 49ers’ commit). “Sinxere” Gray returns at running back, running behind an experienced offensive line led by massive seniors Broome (6-3, 325) and Hansley-McNair (6-2, 330). The West Charlotte defense was also dominant last season, allowing only eight points per game last season. Nine of 11 starters return. The Lions’ have game-changing playmakers at linebacker like senior Littlejohn (Penn State commit), junior Griffin (top ranked class of 2028 recruit) and sophomore Watson. The West Charlotte defensive line is led by all-conference defensive tackle Johnson. The Lions’ secondary is elite with all-state defensive back Cotton (five interceptions), leading a unit that also features Jones (52 tackles, seven interceptions), senior Porter (Elon University commit) and sophomore Walker.

Note: Greiner has helped turn another program around, going 39-21 in his Lions’ tenure. Greiner also led Harding to the 2017, 4A state title. Harding had not been to a state final in more than 50 years before that season.

Outlook: The Hawks have struggled in the last three seasons, going 12-19. This year, nine starters return, includinig junior quarterback Watson. The Hawks will also feature junior running back Blackshear (431 yards rushing) and junior receiver/returner Moore. The West Mecklenburg defense is strong up front with senior defensive end Lavarus Hines and sophomore defensive tackl Flowers returning. Junior linebacker Stancil (60 tackles) and senior safety Myers (two interceptions) will also play key roles.

Note: West Mecklenburg has only had one winning season in the last five years, going 6-5 in 2021.
