Butler 32, Olympic 14: The Bulldogs’ new coach, Brian Hales, made some excellent adjustments at halftime and Butler ran off 20 consecutive second half points at Memorial Stadium. Covenant Day 39, Mount Zion 27: Despite only returning a few starters from last season and debuting nw QB Sidnee Westbrook, a junior, Covenant Day got a big win at home to start the season.

New season, new rules

A new world of North Carolina high school football began over the weekend.

The state’s public schools started playing in eight classes, rather than four, but they’ll also be competing for playoff berths that won’t be based on how they finish in conferences.

Members of the Hough Huskies celebrate their 14-10 victory over the South Pointe Stallions during the Keep Pounding Classic at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC on Friday, August 22, 2025.

Rather, teams’ eligibility for the playoffs will depend on how many games they win — and their difficulty of schedule.

That second factor means high school football fans will be in for some outstanding early-season nonconference treats.

“It makes sense to play a tougher schedule,” said Independence High football coach D.J. McFadden, whose team opened play Friday night by going on the road and stunning South Carolina power Gaffney, 27-21.

In the past, conference champions grabbed the top seeds in the playoffs. Starting this year, all playoff seeding will be based on the RPI rankings. In that system, a team earns points for each victory. It also earns points every time one of its opponents wins … and every time one of its opponents’ opponents wins.

Independence’s victory Friday likely will give the Patriots a huge boost in the RPI ratings later this fall.

That system, plus some savvy scheduling, is the reason both of last year’s N.C. 4A football championship-game teams — champion Grimsley, from Greensboro, and runner-up Rolesville, a Raleigh suburb — played in Charlotte on Friday night against local teams.

Grimsley held off defending 3A state champion West Charlotte in the nightcap of the Keep Pounding Classic at Bank of America Stadium. Rolesville lost at Mallard Creek, which is expected to be a football power this season.

In the Keep Pounding opener, Hough beat Rock Hill’s South Pointe, the Palmetto State’s 4A championship favorite, 14-10.

And Weddington, a 4A semifinalist last season, trounced Mooresville, which was 11-2 last year and appears to be loaded again this fall, 31-10.

There’s more of the same next week, when Hough visits Independence; Rolesville is home against Charlotte private school power Providence Day; and West Charlotte visits defending 2A state champ Monroe.

(rankings are from The Observer’s Sweet 16 poll)

Grimsley 28, No. 2 West Charlotte 27: West Charlotte fought through a rash of penalites and three turnovers to have a chance to upset nationally ranked Grimsley in the Keep Pounding Classic at Bank of America Stadium. Down 1, in overtime, the Lions chose to go for a two-point conversion and the win. But a false start penalty pushed the ball back to the 7, where West Charlotte junor QB threw an incomplete pass that ended the game.

No 3 Hough 14, South Pointe 10: The Huskies’ offense went missing for much of the final three quarters, but QB Ethan Royal scored his second touchdown of the game, the game-winner, late in the fourth quarter.

South Pointe is No. 1 in the S.C. 4A preseason poll. Hough is No. 2 in the N.C. 8A statewide rankings and No. 3 in The Sweet 16.

No. 4 Weddington 31, No. 8 Mooresville 10: Weddington broke open a close game by scoring two touchdowns late in the second quarter and pulling away. The Warriors were up only 3-0 midway in the second period, when Walker Powell connected on a 78-yard pass to Kelson Tate. Mooresville had backed up Weddington at its own 4 with a punt. The Warriors made it 17-0 late in the half on a 1-yard by Brody Anson. That play followed a 35-yard Powell-to-Jon Marks pass.

Anson and Anthony Barrino scored on runs in the second half, as Weddington built its lead to 31-0. Mooresville’s touchdown came on a 31-yard pass from Brody Norman to Dom Morin with 3:58 left.

No. 5 Mallard Creek 36, Rolesville 21: The Mavericks raced to a 22-0 halftime lead and held off the Rams, who were 4A state runners-up last fall and are considered a state championship contender again this season. Mallard Creek did it with a backup, Sam Cheeseboro, at quarterback. He replaced starter Perry Justice, who injured his left ankle in the first quarter.

Cheeseboro, a senior transfer from West Mecklenburg, led the Mavericks on a pair of touchdown drives in the first half. Mallard Creek also scored on a blocked ;punt.

Rolesville narrowed the gap to 22-14 in the third quarter, as Kaleb Williams passed 40 yards to Anthony Roberts for a touchdown and then 12 yards to Henry Evans for a score. But Cheeseboro answered with a 65-yard touchdown pass to Khalil Price with 14 seconds left in the third quarter. That gave the Mavericks a 29-14 lead.

Mallard Creek made it 36-14 on a pick-6 early in the fourth quarter, before Rolesville scored on an Amir Brown run with 3:41 remaining.

No. 6 Charlotte Christian 30, Greensboro Page 9: Jamal Rule ran for three touchdowns in leading the host Knights to a nonconference victory. The Knights struck first, scoring on a 40-yard pass from Levi Kerr to Tate Estep just five minutes into the game. Page tied the game on an 80-yard drive, but Charlotte Christian took the lead for good on a 27-yard field goal by Elijah Boythe late in the quarter.

Rule scored on runs of 6 and 11 yards in the second quarter, then added a 6-yard scoring run in the third quarter. The Knights’ Jack Gullickson picked off a Page pass at the goal line to stop a threat in the fourth quarter.

No. 7 Independence 27, Gaffney 21: Jayden Jones returned a Gaffney punt 87 yards for a touchdown with three minutes remaining, and the Patriots held on for a big interstate victory.

Jones opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 1-yard run, but Gaffney pulled ahead on a 9-yard Jaiden McDowell run and a 6-yard Banks Bouton run a minute later. Bouton’s score came after Gaffney blocked a Patriot punt.

Bently Wyatt ran 7 yards for an Independence touchdown, tying the game 14-14 just a minute into the second quarter. Gaffney regained the lead on Bouton’s 33-yard fourth-down touchdown pass to Ryan Shelton with 7:21 left in the half. But the Patriots battled back and evened the score on a 3-yard run by Wyatt with 1:53 left.

The only second-half score was Jones’ punt return. The Patriot defense stopped Gaffney on downs in the final minute.

Lake Norman 20, No. 10 Sun Valley 16: Micah Slaughter’s 65-yard kickoff return set up Lake Norman’s winning touchdown with three minutes left. Sun Valley had taken a 16-14 lead with nine minutes remaining on a Noah Lineberry touchdown pass. But Slaughter’s return put the Wildcats in position for the go-ahead score.

Sun Valley got the ball back with 1:30 left but turned it over on downs.

No. 14 Charlotte Catholic 37, South Mecklenburg 14: The host Cougars scored two touchdowns in the second and third quarters, building a 37-7 lead and coasting past their south-side rivals.

Chambers 35, Clover 34: Former Carolina Panthers’ defensive back Captain Munnerlyn got a win in his first game as Chambers coach as the Cougars won on the road in South Carolina. Chambers scored the game-winner in the fourth quarter after Clover QB Brody Woolbright thew his second score of the night for a 34-28 lead.

Chambers scored the game-winner on a run up the middle with 53 seconds left. Clover returned 13 starters from a playoff team last season.

Hopewell 22, East Mecklenburg 15: Hopewell scored on a short run and added a two-point conversion with four minutes left, building a 22-7 lead. East Mecklenburg then scored on a pass from Jay De Simone to James Bailey with three minutes to play. The Eagles added a two-point conversion and trailed 22-15.

East Mecklenburg got the ball back in the closing minutes, but the Eagles’ threat ended with an interception.

Providence 35, Hickory Ridge 0: The Panthers broke open a close game with two touchdowns in a four-minute span of the second quarter. The first was on a long pass from Jackson Debe to Shawn Matthews, and Debe then scored on an 18-yard run. The game was played at Ballantyne Ridge High, due to construction at the Providence field.

North Stanly 27, Community School of Davidson 21: Jaden Little scored on a 6-yard run with less than a minute remaining, lifting the host Comets over the Spartans. Community School of Davidson had taken a 21-7 lead in the third quarter on Tyler Johnson’s second and third touchdowns of the game. He scored on a 2-yard run and then on a 16-yard pass from Maddox Jordan. Johnson also had a first-quarter touchdown run.

But North Stanly battled back, scoring on a 40-yard pass from Kylan Dockery to Brady Lowder and a 70-yard punt return by Racere Bruton that tied the game with five minutes left.

SouthLake Christian 13, Lake Norman Charter 7 (OT): Jacob McKinney scored on a 7-yard run in overtime, and SouthLake’s defense stopped Lake Norman Charter for the victory. After a 0-0 tie entering the fourth quarter, Cameron Gandy opened the Eagles’ scoring with a 2-yard run with 10 minutes left. Haze Dodson ran 23 yards for a Lake Norman Charter touchdown with eight minutes left.

Hickory Grove Christian 49, Bonnie Cone Academy 12: Jaxson Lee threw a pair of touchdown passes, and Parker Greene ran for two more scores in Hickory Grove’s lopsided victory. Nathan Dowdy and Kanaan Wagoner each ran for a touchdown, and Jesse Blazi recovered a fumble in the end zone for another Lions’ score. Jayden Maitre scored on a 45-yard fumble return for Bonnie Cone Academy.

Porter Ridge 31, A.L. Brown 21: Raishawn Elmore scored three touchdowns for the Pirates in their nonconference victory. All of Elmore’s scores came in the first half, when Porter Ridge built a 21-14 halftime lead. The Pirates added a Ryan Ladimir field goal and a 42-yard touchdown pass from Keenan Sullivan to Christian Meyers in the second half.

A.J. Settles scored on runs of 9, 13 and 14 yards for A.L. Brown.

South Point 27, Hickory 25: South Point stopped a two-point conversion try by Hickory that could have tied the game with one minute to play. The Raiders’ winning score came with five minutes left, on an 8-yard run by Kaveaun Pless.

Forest Hills 21, Salisbury 0: The Yellow Jackets broke open a close game with two fourth-quarter touchdowns and blanked the Hornets in a battle of perennial football powers. Jasiah Carlton scored on a 65-yard run with nine minutes left, giving Forest Hills a 14-0 lead. And Josiah Ozendine scored on a 40-yard pass reception minutes later for the final margin.

Bessemer City 14, Pine Lake Prep 10: Sophomore Weston Kilgore had two interceptions in his first start with Pine Lake Prep, but the Pride came up short against Bessemer City.

Maiden 28, Lincolnton 26: Maiden scored a touchdown with eight minutes remaining, then held off the Wolves for a victory in a meeting of former Catawba Valley 2A powers. Lincolnton drove to the Maiden 30 in the closing minutes but was stopped.

Rashad Lynch accounted for all four Lincolnton touchdowns, throwing two scoring passes to L.J. Lynch and running for two more scores.

North Lincoln 41, West Lincoln 14: Landon Agee scored on runs of 33, 7, 3, 8 and 60 yards, leading North Lincoln to victory. Danny Burns ran 51 yards for the Knights’ other score. T.J. Stradford and Gus Avery scored on runs for West Lincoln, which was tied 14-14 at halftime but surrendered three third-quarter touchdowns.

Newcomers go 2-1

Three Charlotte-area schools played their first varsity games Friday night, and two were winners.

Langtree Charter, however, lost 64-0 to West Wilkes.

Ambassador Christian and Christ School were tied 7-7 at halftime, but the visiting Lions scored three unanswered tiuchdowns in the third quarter and held on for the victory.

Lincoln Charter raced to a 36-0 halftime lead in its victory. Jeremiah Benton scored on runs of 12 and 4 yards in the first half, and Brayden Walden ran for a touchdown. Brandon Rice threw a 30-yard scoring pass in the second quarter, and the Eagles scored twice on interception returns.
