Providence Day names Jonathan McIntyre interim boys’ basketball coach
After 19 years as an assistant basketball coach at Providence Day, Jonathan McIntyre will be the Chargers’ head coach this season.
Providence Day athletic director Nancy Beatty said that McIntyre will coach the team on an interim basis for Ron Johnson, who is on personal leave.
McIntyre has been part of a coaching staff that saw the Chargers become a state and national power from 2014-2018, including winning a 2016 state title and earning a bid to then DICKS’ national championship in New York.
His staff will include former Providence Day head coach Brian Field, who coached the Chargers for 15 years before retiring in 2021. The Observer recently named Field one of the best coaches in Charlotte in the past 40 years.
Field’s 2016 team, which McIntyre was a part of, was named the best boys’ team of the past 40 years by The Observer.
Also on McIntyre’s staff will be former Duke star Shane Battier, a former NBA champion with the Miami Heat, former Providence Day star Ryan Conrad and former Harding assistant De’Rahn Stinson.
Battier’s son, Zeke, is a junior at Providence Day.
“Coach McIntyre embodies the values of our program,” Beatty said. “His experience, commitment and leadership ensure that our players will continue to grow successfully both on and off the court during this interim period.”
Since taking over from Field in the 2021-22 season, Johnson’s Chargers’ teams have gone 94-33. Providence Day reached the 2024 N.C. Independent Schools’ state final.
