South Mecklenburg wins fourth straight. Sabres dominate East Meck, go to 4-1
South Mecklenburg won its fourth straight game Friday, beating longtime rival East Mecklenburg at Ardrey Kell High School.
The Sabres’ 45-8 win was technically a home game, but because the Sabres’ campus and athletic fields are being overhauled by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, South Mecklenburg is playing its home games on the road.
Friday night, South’s Callaway Williams had a touchdown catch and an interception return for a touchdown, and the Sabres defense forced four turnovers.
The Sabres built a 24-0 halftime lead,. They had two touchdown runs, one by quarterback Carter Gillis, and the Williams interception return.
After an 0-2 start, East Mecklenburg (2-3) had beaten Garinger and North Mecklenburg in back-to-back weeks.
The Eagles turned the ball over three times in the third quarter — twice on interceptions and once on a fumble. They avoided a shutout with three minutes left, when Jay DeSimone connected with James Bailey on a touchdown pass.
South Mecklenburg travels next Friday to Hopewell, while East Mecklenburg visits Ballantyne Ridge.
