Friday’s rewind: How the Sweet 16 fared, NC scores, next week’s schedule

A few thoughts from a busy Week 7 of the high school football season Friday.

1) Lake Norman made a big statement with a 35-0 win over previously unbeaten Statesville. The Wildcats ended a two-game losing streak.

2) At times, West Charlotte looks like a team that could really challenge for a second straight state championship. At times, the Lions look they have some issues that may trip them up in November and December.

The kicking game is a weakness and the penalties, particuarly on third down — whether on offense or defense — are killing or extending drives. If the Lions start playing cleaner, watch out.

3) West Charlotte junior QB Jamouri Nichols is putting up a monster season statistically and he had another big game Friday in a 31-7 win over Independence. The thing, though, that is most impressive about Nichols is how patient he is.

He doesn’t force the ball and will throw it away to live another down. He appears to have a very mature approach. He’s not quite 6-foot and prototypical Division I size, but make no mistake, he’s got Division I game, and not just the entry level, either.

4) South Mecklenburg beat West Meck 45-20 to win its sixth straight game. The Sabres, who were 5-5 in the 2022 season, now have their most wins in a season in four years. South was 9-3 in 2021 under coach Joe Evans.
