Friday’s rewind: How the Sweet 16 fared, NC scores, next week’s schedule
A few thoughts after Week 8 of the high school football season.
1) Nationally-ranked Providence Day drilled Christ School, 71-0, on the road in Arden. Christ School beat the Chargers, at Providence Day, for the 2025 Division I N.C. state championship in basketball last February. Providence Day might’ve been a little extra juiced for some payback.
2) Staying in the private schools, somebody better pay attention to Charlotte Latin. A week after Cannon School beat Charlotte Country Day, 21-15, to end the Bucs’ unbeaten season, Cannon went to play unbeaten Charlotte Latin, hoping for a repeat. Charlotte Latin improved to 7-0 and drilled the Cougars, 38-17. The Hawks are for real.
3) Harding ended a four-game losing streak, beating arch rival Berry, 16-7, in the Battle of Alleghany. The schools are a very short drive from each other on the same street.
4) Sun Valley pulled off one of the bigger surprises Friday, shutting out Charlotte Catholic, 21-0, at Catholic. Catholic has now lost two of its past three games and the Cougars are having trouble scoring — with just 21 points in three weeks. Sun Valley (4-3) won its second straight and is in contention for a top two seed in the tough Southern Carolinas conference.

Friday’s roundup
Independence bounced back from last week’s loss to West Charlotte in a big way Friday night.
The 10th-ranked Patriots scored five times in the first half and routed visiting Chambers 41-6 on Homecoming night.
Several Patriots had big nights, but none more than Dallas Brannon.
Brannon, a senior linebacker and a Virginia commit, had 14 tackles, including 11 solo stops. He also had six tackles for loss, two blocked punts and a sack.
And if that wasn’t enough, Brannon took a short snap on a fake punt in the second quarter and galloped 71 yards for a touchdown.
Independence (5-2, 1-1 Power Six 7A/8A) scored on its first two possessions, on touchdown runs by Travis Hill and Jayden Jones.
Chambers (3-4, 0-2) tried to cut into the Patriots’ lead in the second quarter, driving to the Independence 35. But a fourth-down halfback pass was picked off by Jon Snipes, who dashed 68 yards for a touchdown and a 20-0 lead.
The Patriots made it 27-0 with 3:25 left in the half on a 32-yard run by Jones, who weaved past several tacklers for the score.
Then, with less than a minute left in the half, Independence lined up to punt on fourth down. Brannon took the snap and went for the touchdown.
Quarterback Jared Street fired a 37-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Myers Jr. midway in the third quarter, giving Independence a 41-0 lead and starting a running clock.
Chambers averted a shutout by scoring on Zion Haley’s 4-yard run early in the final period.
Sweet 16 teams
No. 1 Providence Day 71, Christ School 0: The Chargers (7-0) raced to a 50-0 halftime lead in routing host Christ School (3-5).
No. 2 Hough 66, Garinger 0: The Huskies remained unbeaten (7-0, 2-0) and scored an easy Greater Charlotte 7A/8A victory over the Wildcats (1-6, 0-2).
The Huskies face their main conference competition over the next two weeks, hosting South Mecklenburg (6-1, 2-0) next Friday and traveling to Myers Park (6-1, 2-0) in two weeks.
No. 5 Myers Park 63, Hopewell 8: The Mustangs (6-1, 2-0 Greater Charlotte 7A/8A) roared to a 35-0 first-quarter lead and were up 56-0 at the half. Hopewell fell to 2-5, 0-2.
No. 6 Weddington 34, Cuthbertson 7: Walker Powell threw three touchdown passes, and the visiting Warriors (7-1, 4-0) scored a lopsided Southern Carolina 6A/7A victory over the Cavaliers (3-5, 1-3).
Two of the touchdown passes went to Kelson Tate.
No. 7 Mooresville 49, North Iredell 7: Brody Norman completed 12-of-16 passes for 161 yards and three touchdowns, as the Blue Devils (5-2, 2-0) routed the Warriors (1-6, 0-2) in a North Piedmont 6A/7A contest. Ja’Darius McCombs also ran for a pair of touchdowns and finished with 159 rushing yards on six carries.
North Iredell averted a shutout on a 75-yard scoring run by Harold Jackson.
No. 8 East Lincoln 30, Fred T. Foard 0: Grant Lawless threw four touchdown passes, two to Jaxon Dollar, and the Mustangs (8-0, 6-0 Western Foothills 4A/5A) remained tied with Hickory for first place.
No. 9 Ashbrook 43, Kings Mountain 7: The Green Wave (7-0, 3-0) broke open a close game with 36 points over the final three quarters and logged a surprisingly one-sided Big South 5A/6A victory over the Mountaineers (5-2, 2-1). Ben Gregory ran for a pair of Ashbrook touchdowns in the romp.
Sun Valley 21, No. 11 Charlotte Catholic 0: The visiting Spartans (4-3, 2-1 Southern Carolina 6A/7A) stunned the Cougars (4-3, 1-2), beating Charlotte Catholic for the first time in at least 20 years.
Noah Lineberry threw a first-half touchdown pass, and the Spartans scored on the fourth quarter on a short run and a 50-yard interception return with one minute left.
Charlotte Catholic was hurt by poor field position in the first half, twice starting possessions inside their 10 after Sun Valley punts.
No. 12 Porter Ridge 23, Marvin Ridge 21: Christian Cathen returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown with 5:58 left, giving the Pirates (6-2, 3-1 Southern Carolina 6A/7A) a 23-14 lead. Marvin Ridge (3-4, 1-2) scored with 3:15 left, but the Pirates ran out the clock on their next possession.
No. 15 Jay M. Robinson 42, South Rowan 0: L.J. Watson ran for two touchdowns, and Antonio Howie scored on a run and a pass reception, as the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-0) steamrolled to a South Piedmont 4A/5A victory. South Rowan is 3-4, 0-4.
No. 16 Palisades 54, Ballantyne Ridge 14:
Palisades built a 21-7 halftime lead on a Lincoln Wise run, a Cole Hough pass to Hudson Nolden, and a Jolani Legette punt return. The Pumas (5-2, 2-0 Southwestern 7A/8A) broke it open with three touchdowns in the third quarter, on runs by Hough, Nick Rankin and Adonis Arch.
Palisades added fourth-quarter touchdowns by Rankin (punt return) and Arch (75-yard run). Ballantyne Ridge is 1-6, 0-2.
Mecklenburg games
Albemarle 41, Bonnie Cone Leadership 14: Albemarle (3-4, 1-3) built a 34-6 halftime lead and coasted to a Catawba-Yadkin 1A/2A/3A victory. Bonnie Cone’s first-half touchdown came on a pass from Jayce Newton to Kendrick Williams. Newton passed to Jacque Byrd for the Eagles’ other score.
Ardrey Kell 35, Rocky River 7: The host Knights (4-3, 1-1 Southwestern 7A/8A) broke open a close game with three second-half touchdowns.
Rocky River (2-5, 0-2) trailed only 14-7 at the half, but Ardrey Kell pulled ahead 21-7 early in the third quarter on a 40-yard pass from Jared Curtis to Khylieb Rodriguez. Curtis had another touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
Christ the King 14, Lake Norman Charter 7: The Crusaders (5-2, 2-1 Catawba Shores 2A/3A/4A) spotted Lake Norman Charter (3-5, 1-3) a 7-0 lead, then rallied for the victory. Christ the King marched for a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half for the winning score.
Dylan Wignot threw a 95-yard touchdown pass to Eli Washington for Lake Norman Charter’s touchdown.
Community School of Davidson 49, Lincoln Charter 7: The host Spartans (4-3, 3-0) kept pace with Corvian Community atop the Catawba Shores 2A/3A/4A, as Ty Sigler threw four touchdown passes. He connected twice with Sam Mack. Tyler Johnson scored on a pass reception and a kickoff return.
Lincoln Charter (3-5, 1-3) scored on a Jeremiah Benton run.
Corvian Community 49, Langtree Charter 7: Quarterback Carson Nagel ran for two touchdowns and passed 64 yards to Chaz Campbell for another score, as the Cardinals (6-1, 4-0) rolled to a Catawba Shores 2A/3A/4A win. Kelvin Stinson scored on a pass reception and a run, and Trey Dukes III scored on an interception return.
Corvian led Langtree (1-6, 0-3) by a 35-0 score after one quarter.
Covenant Day 44, SouthLake Christian 29: Covenant Day (2-6, 1-1) snapped a six-game losing streak by taking this Big Six game. The Lions built a 21-7 halftime lead and held off a comeback bid by the Eagles (2-5, 0-2).
Harding 16, Berry Academy 7: The Rams (2-5, 1-3) won this Greater Metro 6A/7A game, as the offensive problems continued for Berry Academy (0-7, 0-4). The teams are neighboring schools but hadn’t played each other in three years.
Olympic 20, West Cabarrus 17: The Trojans took sole possession of first place in the Greater Metro 6A/7A and padded their playoff standing, and they owe it all to Fernando Zelaya for the second week in a row.
Zelaya kicked a 26-yard field goal in the game’s final minute, a week after his field goal helped Olympic knocked off A.L. Brown.
The Trojans (5-2, 4-0) also scored on a Zahir Smilh run and a 21-yard pass from Chance Cato to David McAdams.
West Cabarrus slipped to 3-4, 3-1.
Other area games
A.L. Brown 39, Central Cabarrus 21: The Wonders put a big dent in the Vikings’ playoff hopes, rallying from a 21-18 halftime deficit for the Greater Metro 6A/7A victory.
Lemar Grier ran for touchdowns of 10, 4 and 6 yards in the second half and finished with about 170 rushing yards.
A.L. Brown (4-3, 3-1) remained second in the conference. Central Cabarrus, which entered the night on the edge of the 6A playoff race, fell to 2-5, 1-3.
Bandys 47, North Lincoln 23: Landon Agee ran for touchdowns of 60 and 7 yards, and Anthony Elberti scored on a 9-yard run, but it wasn’t enough for the Knights (1-7, 0-6) in this Western Foothills 4A/5A contest. Bandys improved to 4-3, 3-2.
Concord 20, Jesse Carson 7: Alexis Rosario-Beltran broke a 7-7 tie with field goals of 52 and 30 yards in the second half, and the Spiders (4-3, 3-1) beat Carson (3-4, 1-3) in a South Piedmont 4A/5A game.
Crest 62, Hunter Huss 7: The visiting Chargers (6-1, 3-0 Big South 5A/6A) crushed the Huskies (5-3, 2-2), scoring four touchdowns in the final three minutes of the second quarter.
Leading 14-7, Crest scored on three runs and an interception. The third rushing touchdown was set up by a blocked punt.
Lincolnton 35, Shelby 34 (OT): The Wolves won this Southern Piedmont 2A/3A/4A showdown, as Jalaythian Mayfield scored on a short run in overtime, and quarterback Rashad Lynch followed with a two-point conversion run for the winning points.

Lincolnton is now 7-1, 6-0.
Mountain Island Charter 28, Union Academy 27: An’Dre Ramseur threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score, as the Raptors (4-3, 3-1) held off the Cardinals (3-4, 1-2) for a Catawba-Yadkin 1A/2A/3A victory.
Union Academy scored with less than a minute remaining but failed to convert a two-point conversion for the winning points.
Aamir Gilcreast scored on a run and a pass reception for the Raptors.
Northwest Cabarrus 44, Salisbury 14: The Trojans (6-1, 4-0) remained tied with Jay M. Robinson atop the South Piedmont 4A/5A, as Hudson Irwin threw three touchdown passes. Salisbury fell to 1-6, 0-4.
South Point 53, North Gaston 0: Patrick Blee ran for two touchdowns and passed to Peyton McCarn for another, as the Raiders (5-2, 2-2) cruised to a Big South 5A/6A victory. Kaveaun Pless ran for two touchdowns, including a 66-yard dash. North Gaston is now 1-7, 0-4.
