Regional powers from Mecklenburg, Cabarrus counties join Observer Sweet 16

This week, two new teams join The Observer’s Sweet 16.

Northwest Cabarrus (6-1) and Corvian Community School (7-1) are in the rankings this week.

Northwest Cabarrus won its fourth straight game Friday, beating Salisbury 44-14. Since losing 21-17 to No. 8 Ashbrook on Sept. 5, the Trojans have outscored opponents 172-48.

Corvian, the N.C. 1A state runner-up a year ago, is a relatively new charter school. It is located in northeast Charlotte near Mallard Creek.

Now a 2A school, Corvian has only lost to 7A Butler, a three-time state champion from Mecklenburg County, falling 14-9 on Aug. 29. Since then, the Cardinals have won five in a row, including Friday’s 49-7 win over Langtree Charter.

The Sweet 16 ranks schools in the media companies’ coverage area that are part of the N.C. High School Athletic Association and the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association. Those teams come from Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union counties.

The rankings are compiled by longtime N.C. high school football expert Chris Hughes, a co-host of The Observer’s streaming Talking Preps show.
