NCHSAA roundup: Hough’s Devin Gilroy among 8 Mecklenburg state tennis champs

Eight Mecklenburg County players won NCHSAA tennis championships Saturday.

— Hough High School’s Devin Gilroy won the 8A individual tennis championship, beating Shreyal Uniyal of Green Level High in Cary at the Millbrook Exchange Center in Raleigh.

After winning her semifinals in straight sets — 6-1, 6-3 over Braelyn Roberson of Wilmington Hoggard — Gilroy also beat Uniyal in straights, taking the final 6-3, 6-1.

Myers Park’s Teagan Reilly and Lila Cheatwood won the 8A doubles title, beating Providence’s Natasha Wallace and Vivian Wu 6-2, 6-4.

— In 7A, Ballantyne Ridge’s Juliana Andrea Castellanos Trujillo beat Cardinal Gibbon’s Kylie Ryan 6-2, 6-0 in the finals at Millbrook Exchange.

— In the 6A finals at Ting Park in Holly Springs, Charlotte Catholic’s Ella Davis and Madison McWilliams won the championship, beating Watauga’s Larson Berry and Abby Talton 6-0, 6-2 in the championship round.

— In 4A doubles, Lake Norman Charter’s team of Lucy Falls and Eleina Moon won the championship, beating Carrboro’s Bea Unin and Claire O’Brien 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.

7A doubles: Cardinal Gibbons’ Isabelle Lu and Lilly Heiden beat Marvin Ridge’s team of Eleri Pratiknjo and Riona Ray 6-1, 6-1.

6A singles: East Chapel Hill’s Samantha Benton won singles, 6-1, 6-0 over Ellie Alspaugh of South Caldwell.

5A: East Lincoln’s Sydney Dann beat teammate Karsyn Sink 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4) to win the singles title. Wilson Fike’s Holland Ellis and Emory Skinner won doubles, 6-1, 7-5 over Winston-Salem Atkins’ team of Rosalyn Chen and Lilyan Chen.

4A: Carrboro’s Ryan Hanes won 6-2, 6-2 over teammate Morgan Stowe in singles.

3A: Pine Lake Prep’s Mallory Aull beat teammate Madison Utz 7-5, 6-1 to win singles. N.C. Science & Math’s Emily Tang and Cora Wymbs beat Mount Airy’s Bella Brown and Emmie Brant 6-0, 6-0 in doubles.

2A: Bishop McGuinness star Lucia Neves won the singles title, 6-0, 6-0, over Research Triangle’s Savannah Shih. In doubles, Research Triangle’s Victoria Zhou and Alexis Zhao beat East Wilkes’ Ava Darnell and Emerson Simmons 6-4, 6-0.

1A: Thomas Jefferson’s Abby Crawford beat Morganton N.C. Science & Math’s Anjana Ramanujam 6-1, 6-0 in singles. In doubles, NCSSM Morganton’s Shriya Reddy and Leah Gibson beat teammates Gina Byon and Kristen Boyd 6-1, 6-4 in the finals.

Cross-country: Myers Park wins 8A regional

Myers Park won the NCHSAA 8A Western Regional boys’ and girls’ cross-country championship Saturday.

The Mustangs’ boys topped Hough and Durham Jordan. Ardrey Kell was fourth.

Myers Park’s Christopher Burns ran a time of 15 minutes, 47.76 seconds to win the regional individual title, ahead of teammate James Freeman (15:49.68).

The Myers Park girls finished ahead of Pinecrest and Ardrey Kell. Providence was fourth. Pinecrest’s Madeline Dorsch won the girls’ individual title.

— In 7A, Michael Rivlin of Marvin Ridge won the boys’ title in 15:38.85, ahead of Porter Ridge’s Cade Creswell (15:42.93) and Cuthbertson’s Joshua Palmer (15:49.53).

Marvin Ridge won the boys’ team title with 39 points, well ahead of Cuthbertson (86) and Weddington (122).

Weddington’s Emma Balaban won the girls’ title (17:38.41), ahead of Lake Norman’s Kasey Dingman (17:41.42) and Marvin Ridge’s Caitlin Kasten (17:47.02).

Marvin Ridge won the team title with 47 points, ahead of Cuthbertson (58), Weddington (90) and Lake Norman (112).

— North Lincoln won the 5A boys’ west regional with 43 points, ahead of North Buncombe (61) and Parkwood (81). North Lincoln’s girls also won with 20 points, well ahead of West Henderson (52) and Franklin (93).

— Other winners included Lincoln Charter (girls 4A), Pine Lake Prep (girls 3A), Corvan (boys 2A) and Christ The King (girls 2A)

Volleyball: Marvin Ridge marches on

Top-seeded Marvin Ridge blew past Winston-Salem’s Reagan High School, 3-0, to advance to the N.C. 8A semifinals Saturday.

The Mavericks, the No. 1 seed in the West, haven’t lost a game in the playoffs, beating Davie County, North Mecklenburg and Marvin Ridge.

Marvin Ridge will host Mooresville or Cox Mill in the semifinals next week, on a date to be announced.

Marvin Ridge (30-2) has won 19 straight games and is undefeated in 17 home matches. The Mavericks are trying to get back to the championship round after losing to Raleigh’s Cardinal Gibbons, 3-1, in the 2024 N.C. 4A state championship game.
