Memorable play lifts Charlotte Country Day past rival Charlotte Latin
Charlotte Country Day beat arch rival Charlotte Latin on a play the Buccaneers and their fans will remember for a long time.
Down by four points with less than 90 seconds to play, Country Day quarterback Achilles Morales hit 5-star sophomore receiver Braylon Clark for a 77-yard score, lifting the Bucs to a 24-21 come-from-behind win.
Country Day kind of stole this one.
After scoring 17 unanswered points in the second quarter, Country Day took a 17-7 lead that had the Bucs’ home fans buzzing.
Latin had won three of the past four meetings, including two via blowout, and cut the lead in this one to 17-14 with 62 seconds left in the third quarter when QB Troy Logan ran in from 6 yards out.
Next, Latin’s Na’il Diggs got an interception, which led to the Hawks’ DJ Douglas running 14 yards for a score and 21-17 lead.
Latin had scored twice in 106 seconds — and the game changed just like that. Country Day looked listless, until its defense got a fourth quarter stop to give the ball to Morales and the offense.
Then the magic happened.
Clark ran a post route to get open for the touchdown pass from Morales.
“Really it was one-on-one,” Clark said.” I knew I had a post. I was gonna get it and score a touchdown, ball game. That’s all I had to do.”
Clark also added two huge catches in the first half, including a 30-yarder over two Charlotte Latin defenders.
Country Day (6-2) ended a stretch where it had lost twice in three games. Latin (7-2) lost its second straight after falling 41-0 to Providence Day last week.
“We knew we would win this game.” Clark said.
