Marvin Ridge moved within one victory of another state championship appearance with a lopsided victory over Porter Ridge.

Charlotte Catholic, Marvin Ridge and Cuthbertson are among six Charlotte-area teams that punched their tickets to the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s boys’ soccer regional finals with victories Thursday night.

Myers Park was among area teams to fall short, as the Mustangs dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to West Forsyth.

Charlotte Catholic advanced to the state semifinals in Class 6A by trouncing Northern Guilford 5-0.

Marvin Ridge defeated Porter Ridge 5-1, while Cuthbertson upset Lake Norman 1-0 in Class 7A. Those teams will square off Tuesday night at Marvin Ridge.

In Class 3A, Pine Lake Prep advanced to the West finals by downing Piedmont Community Charter 3-1. The Pride will travel to top-seeded and unbeaten Polk County on Tuesday.

Community School of Davidson had the wildest result of the night, as the fifth-seeded Spartans downed top seed Elkin in a 5-4 shootout. The Spartans will travel to Gray Stone Day for the 2A West championship Tuesday.

Thursday’s schedule featured the semifinals in Class 8A, plus quarterfinals in Classes 1A through 7A. Thursday’s 8A winners get a bye in Tuesday’s round, while the other Thursday winners advance to regional finals (state semifinals) Tuesday.

The state championships will be Nov. 20-22.

Here are highlights from Thursday’s quarterfinals involving Charlotte-area teams.

CLASS 7A

Cuthbertson 1, Lake Norman 0 (OT): The sixth-seeded Cavaliers (14-6-1) scored a goal with 4:45 left in the first overtime and made that stand up, surprising second seed Lake Norman (19-2-2). The host Wildcats had an excellent chance to tie the match with 14 seconds left, but a header sailed about 2 feet over the top of the net.

Marvin Ridge 5, Porter Ridge 1: The top-seeded Mavericks, who were state runners-up in Class 4A a year ago, moved within one victory of another state championship appearance with a lopsided victory. Marvin Ridge (20-3-1) led 1-0 at halftime but surged in the final 40 minutes. Cassias McKinnon led the way with a goal and two assists. Collin McKee, Collon Perkins, Andrew Estock and Addison Long added single goals for Marvin Ridge. Fifth-seeded Porter Ridge finished 19-5-2.
