Marvin Ridge is looking for history to repeat itself Friday afternoon, when the Mavericks face D.H. Conley for the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s 7A girls’ volleyball state championship.

The Mavericks (31-2) and Conley (26-2) square off at 2:30 p.m. in Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, as part of a big weekend of NCHSAA championship activity.

State champions will be crowned in volleyball, girls’ tennis and boys’ and girls’ cross-country.

And with the NCHSAA having expanded from four to eight size classifications, that means 32 championships will be decided.

Charlotte-area teams make up a significant part of the finals field.

Marvin Ridge also is a favorite in boys’ and girls’ cross-country. The 7A finals in those events are set for Saturday.

In volleyball, Marvin Ridge doesn’t want a repeat of recent history. Coach Brook Hammers’ team lost in last year’s 4A finals to Cardinal Gibbons. Instead, it would prefer a repeat of 2018, when Marvin Ridge beat D.H. Conley for the 3A state championship.

Here is a look at this weekend’s state championship action. The volleyball and cross-country finals will be streamed on the NFHS Network.

Friday

VOLLEYBALL

After the Marvin Ridge-D.H. Conley 7A finals, Lake Norman Charter (29-3) will face Uwharrie Charter (28-3) in the 4A championship match at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. Lake Norman Charter is riding a 24-match winning streak.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

State finals in girls’ team tennis will be at the Burlington Tennis Center.

Two Charlotte-area teams will play at 9 a.m., with Myers Park (20-0) facing Hoggard (15-0) for the 8A championship, and Charlotte Catholic (26-1) meeting the winner of Thursday’s semifinal between East Chapel Hill and Terry Sanford. That will be for the 6A crown.

There’s more tennis at noon, with the 5A finals. East Lincoln and Hickory met Thursday afternoon for the West Regional title, with the winner advancing to Friday’s championship match against the winner of Thursday’s East Regional final between Durham School of the Arts and Seaforth.

CROSS-COUNTRY

The championship meets will be Friday and Saturday at the Ivy Redmon Complex in Kernersville, near Winston-Salem. Finals in classes 1A through 4A will be run Friday, with 5A through 8A set for Saturday.
