Beady Waddell steps down as West Mecklenburg High football coach after 6 years

After six seasons as head football coach at West Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, Beady Waddell has stepped down.

Waddell’s teams were 19-40, including 1-10 this season. Waddell’s 2021 team finished 5-5.

Waddell was hired in March 2020, to replace Nick Mata, who coached at West Mecklenburg for one season.

Waddell came to Mecklenburg County from Gastonia’s Hunter Huss High, where he was strength coach, assistant defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and linebacker coach.

While at West Mecklenburg, Waddell coached 36 players who signed college scholarships, including current Hawk linebacker/safety Marcus Myers, who committed to NCAA Division II Concord (W. Va).

“I can’t thank coach Waddell enough for his dedication and commitment to West Mecklenburg athletics and the football program over the past six years,” Hawks’ athletic director Ryan Lutz said. “His passion and leadership has shaped countless student-athletes, and his impact will be felt for years to come.”

West Mecklenburg has not had a winning season since 2019, when the Hawks finished 6-5. At the time, the 2019 campaign was the school’s fourth straight winning season.

Before that run began, in 2015, West Meck had posted three winning seasons in 11 years.
