Friday’s girls’ rewind: Queen’s Grant stops Myers Park at George Lynch Invitational

Queen’s Grant holds off Myers Park in Sweet 16 battle

Queen’s Grant got 25 points from sophomore Za’Miya Bynum to beat Myers Park, 57-45, in a feature game at the George Lynch Invitational.

Queen’s Grant, No. 12 in The Observer’s preseason Sweet 16, improved to 5-0. The NCHSAA 2A public school team stopped 8A Myers Park (1-1) on the Mustangs’ home floor.

Misa Garris had 10 points, five steals and four rebounds for Queen’s Grant.

Myers Park got 22 points, five rebounds and four steals from Amani Barner.

FRIDAY’S #BIG5 GIRLS’ PERFORMERS

Kate Breault, Hough: In a 73-36 win over Lincolnton, Breault had a game-high 22 points.

Za’Miya Bynum, Queen’s Grant: In a 44-34 win over Myers Park at the George Lynch Invitational, Bynum had 26 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

Lanie Edwards, Charlotte Latin: Edwards had 30 points in a 62-39 win over Charlotte Catholic. It was the Hawks’ first win over Catholic in five years.

Kaitlyn Hensley, South Meck: In a 67-31 win over East Meck, Hensley had a game-high 18 points, shot 50 percent from the field, and made four 3-point shots.

Rayana Minard, Lake Norman: In a 64-52 win over rival Hickory Ridge, Minard had a team-high 18 points.

SATURDAY’S KEY GAMES

(Boys and girls) CabCo Classic, at Cox Mill High – Cabarrus County’s teams will square off in eight games, starting at 9 a.m. and lasting late into the night.

(Girls) Mallard Creek (2-0) vs. Concord Academy (3-2), in George Lynch Invitational at Myers Park, 1 p.m. (auxiliary gym) – The Mavericks are off to a big start, with four starters back from a year ago. PG Kara Anderson, a Georgia Southern commit, leads the way (16.3 ppg). Concord Academy G Justice Alexander is averaging 24 points in the Eagles’ first five games, and F Jada Powell is getting 9.8 rebounds a contest.
