8A FINAL: Hoggard prevails
The state championship is going to Wilmington.
Hoggard shut out West Forsyth, 2-0, Thursday night to win the NCHSAA 8A state championship game. It is the first state boys’ state soccer championship for the Vikings.
Hoggard (22-1-2) won its fifth straight game and got its third shutout in a row.
The Vikings did it with defense. They limited West Forsyth (20-3-2) to two shots in the first half and outshot the Titans 10-4 for the game.
Hoggard got on the scoreboard quickly, as Ari Tanner scored an unassisted goal in the sixth minute. The Vikings made it 2-0 with 27 minutes remaining, on a goal by James McLean. He converted a rebound of Jace Tucker’s shot.
Tanner was named the most valuable player of the 8A finals.
West Forsyth, which upset Myers Park in the semifinals, had an 11-game win streak snapped. Hoggard’s only loss this season was to Ardrey Kell by a score of 3-2 on Aug. 16.
7A FINAL: Marvin Ridge wins in OT
Marvin Ridge lost a lead with less than 10 seconds to play in regulation, but won in OT.

6A FINAL: Charlotte Catholic wins on PKs
Charlotte Catholic rallied to tie the state championship game with Apex’s Middle Creek High and the Cougars won their eighth state championship on penalty kicks.
Emmett Drensek scored the championship winner.
Drensek’s kick gave the Cougars a 4-3 edge in the shootout.
The teams had played to a 1-1 tie in regulation, and there was no scoring in two 10-minute and two five-minute overtime sessions that followed.

5A FINAL: Western Alamance wins back-to-back
Western Alamance’s defense smothered the East Lincoln attack, and the Warriors captured the 5A boys’ state soccer championship with a 1-0 win.
It was the second straight boys’ soccer state title for Western Alamance, which also captured a girls’ soccer state title last year.
Western Alamance became only the eighth team in N.C. High School Athletic Association history to complete an undefeated season and win a state title.
4A FINAL: Southwestern Randolph rolls
Southwestern Randolph scored two goals in a one-minute span of the first half and cruised to a 3-0 victory over Newton-Conover on Friday evening in the 4A boys’ soccer championship.
The Cougars (27-1), who lost in the 2A finals a year ago to Clinton, built a 3-0 halftime lead and held off several threats by Newton-Conover (24-2-3) in the second half.
Southwestern Randolph got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute, when Chris Betancourt dribbled past two Red Devil defenders and beat goalkeeper Phineas Humphrey with a low line drive.
The Cougars had a chance to double the lead two minutes later when the referee awarded the team a penalty kick. But Humphrey stopped the Southwestern Randolph shot.
The Cougars broke it open in the 37th minute. Betancourt’s free kick was stopped by Humphrey, but the ball caromed out to Kevin Garcia, who booted the ball into the net. Less than a minute later, Fernando Hernandez-Dominguez scored on a rebound of a shot by Yael Rebolla-Ortiz.
It was the second time in two years that the teams met in the playoffs. Last season, Southwestern Randolph was assigned to the West region and beat Newton-Conover 5-4 in a penalty kick shootout. This year, the Cougars were placed in the East region.
Newton-Conover was trying to win its fourth boys’ state soccer title.
3A FINAL: Fourth title for Wallace-Rose Hill
Wallace-Rose Hill (19-4-1) dominated play for much of the match and scored a 2-0 victory over Polk County on Saturday in the 3A boys’ soccer state championship match.
It was the fourth state title in boys’ soccer for the Duplin County school. Wallace-Rose Hill had a 2-4-1 record after a Sept. 16 loss to Cape Fear, but the Bulldogs won their final 17 matches.
It was the first loss of the season for Polk County (18-1-3), which has won two state championships but hadn’t reached the soccer finals in 19 years.
Wallace-Rose Hill got its first shot on goal just 10 seconds into the match, and the Bulldogs’ Felix Funez nearly scored in the 22nd minute, when he took a shot that caromed off the left goal post. Funez had a big opening 40 minutes, with five shots on goal.
But the Bulldogs broke through in the 59th minute. Their front line drew Polk County goalkeeper Charlie Wagoner out of the net, and Iker Alvarado got enough of an angle with his shot to put the ball behind Wagoner.
Wallace-Rose Hill got the clincher with less than 10 minutes remaining, and it came on a breakaway. Steven Acosta delivered a pass to Funez, who scored.
2A FINAL: Manteo wins on PK
Manteo scored on a penalty kick with 11 minutes left in the match Friday and held on for a 1-0 victory over Gray Stone Day in the NCHSAA’s 2A boys’ soccer championship match.
Manteo (20-4) and Gray Stone Day (15-4-4) played a tight defensive battle in the first half, but Gray Stone Day applied heavy pressure over the final 40 minutes.
The Crusaders outshot Manteo 10-4 in the second half, but Manteo goalkeeper Hazael Alverez-Navarro made four saves, and his teammates helped stop several other Gray Stone Day threats. Alverez-Navarro was named the match’s most valuable player.
The only score of the second half was Manteo’s. In the 69th minute of the title game, Gray Stone Day goalkeeper Carter Sawyer came in contact with Manteo striker Matt Lappin in the box. Referee Aaron Cloninger awarded Manteo a penalty kick, and Eli Jones converted.
It was only the second time that Manteo reached a state soccer championship. The Outer Banks school lost in the 2005 1A finals to Thomasville by a 4-3 score in overtime.
Gray Stone Day, from the Stanly County town of Misenheimer, won the 1A state crown two years ago.
1A FINAL: Thomas Jefferson wins
Sophomore River Harrill blasted a shot into the right side of the net in a penalty kick shootout, lifting Thomas Jefferson Academy to the NCHSAA Class 1A boys’ state soccer championship Thursday evening.
Harrill’s kick gave the Gryphons (26-1) a 4-3 edge over Falls Lake Academy (22-6) in the shootout, after the teams had played to a 1-1 tie through 80 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime.
Jase Warner, Griffin Bumgardner and Landon Burgess converted on shots earlier in the penalty kick session for Thomas Jefferson Academy, which is in the Cleveland County town of Mooresboro, northwest of Shelby.
Devin Blalock, Nicolas Hart and Kyle Stines had converted on kicks earlier for Falls Lake Academy. Thomas Jefferson Academy goalkeeper Jace McDonald made a save on one of Falls Lake’s penalty kicks; the other shot went wide of the net.
Falls Lake took a 1-0 lead at the 24:22 mark of the first half, when Blalock scored on a rebound of a Stines shot.
Thomas Jefferson Academy tied it in the second half, on Warner’s 20-yard shot from the left side. That came with 21:36 left in the match. The teams then played scoreless soccer until the shootout.
